Tach making AGGRAVATING noise!

Okay, the tach in my 84 300D is making a very annoying noise above 3200rpm. It sounds exactly like when a small electric motors bearings (like in a toy or RC model) goes bad. Kinda a snik-snik-snik-snik sound. Fairly loud, so much so that I can't stand driving any faster than 68mph or it starts driving me mad. I know its the tach as it also does it on heavy acceleration whenever the tach needle passes 3200rpm..... I dunno how the tach works but I assume its some magnetic/electric motor affair. Anyone have this problem? Is it worth disassembling the tach and trying to lube it? I suppose I could disconnect the tach drive and motor on in peace in the meantime... Thanks, RT

I don't see how your tach, being a simple direct current gauge (moving field winding over a permanent magnet) with added circuitry (the rpm's which are electronic pulses converted into a constant D.C. voltage representing a value on the gauge)could be the problem. It could be your speedometer cable. Does it happen it gear or all the time? Maybe a bad capacitor could be making the gauge needle vibrate???? Don't know.....let's see what more people have to say...

Love that sound NAUGHHHHT

Yep Yep... its such a sweeeet sound.

Anyway, I'm with Jhal. Sounds like the typical speedo cable sound to me too. I listen to it every day.

I could understand if it was the speedo cable if it only did it when going faster than 68mph. However it makes the noise when I floor it and it shifts through the gears. Each time the tach passes 3200rpm the noise starts, in each gear, on the way up to and past 68mph.... Dunno how the tach worked exactly but I assume I can just disconnect my tach amp to disable the tach and test my theory? RT
