300TD front suspension Q: need advice quick!
Help! I looked at a 300TD (84) today and had qualms only with the rust and with the front suspension. It seems the pass front sway bar end link has come undone at the bar itself. The bushings are completely gone, throwing the geometry way off up there. It looks like a bolt holds the sway bar to the busing; does the bolt thread into the bar end, or is a stud supposed to be there on the bar end? All that's there is a stub with no threads or anything. I am hoping it's what's left of a bolt, and that it can be backed out and a new set of bushings and bolt/washer installed. While I'm at it, any idea on price for these parts?
Does anyone know of a parts diagram I can access online to look at? I am out of town and hate to drive home w/o checking on this... the car isn't that bad otherwise. I'll look around on the site here and see what I can find... Thanks! Chris 217 512 8336 (cell... if you have any urgent advice, post or give me a holler and I'll ring you back!) |

Chris,
Be warned- W123's can rust severly. Mercedes uses an extensive layer of undercoating and it will "hide" lots of rust. Sounds like the car will need a new swaybar and bushings plus hardware. I'd guess- $150 list from the dealership. As for online catalogs- there are lots of companies and they use "worldpac" software. They are a big US wholesaler. I use www.thebenzbin.com frequently. Many people look at performance products catalogs. If it needs a swaybar because the bushings are gone.. this car may need lots more $$$. Nothing more expensive than a cheap mercedes. Michael
