Brake Resevoir Runneth over...

I have a 1983 300DT and I noticed a LARGE amount of brake fluid under it the other morning? I opened the hood to find much wetness around where the resevoir attached to the Master cylinder (?)

Anyway, I am obviously losing a good deal of fluid- I want to fix myself, whats the technical problem and what do I do?

Thanks.

Most likely the two rubber grommets between the resevoir and the brake master cylinder are leaking. Wipe the master cylinder clean and watch carefully for leaks. If the fluid seems to be coming from under the resevoir then it's the grommets. Siphon the rest of the fluid out of the resevoir as best you can and pull the resevoir straight up. It helps if you wiggle it a bit but the resevoir should just pop off without much force. Replace the two grommets (available from FastLane or the dealer). It helps to lubricate the new grommets a bit with clean brake fluid before you push the resevoir back on. Although it may not be necessary, I'd recommend you throughly bleed the brake system afterward to be sure any dirt or rubber bits that may have gotten into the system are cleaned out.
