loop to pin type glow plug converters
Can anyone direct me to a website where I can order the glow plugs that convert the loop type to pencil/pin type glow plugs? I just installed a 78 240D engine that uses loop type plugs into a 1982 240D chassis that is wired for the loop type. I am hoping I can by the new type, use the wiring in the 1982 chassis and be done with this project.
Any direction would be appreciated. The loop type when I tested them just don't get as redhot as the pencil type on the old engine... Thanks, JMH |

Do you mean an '82 240D that is wired for the parallel (PIN) type GP? When I worked as a tool maker I made some converter bushings out of parallel GP for my 190D. Hardest part was was getting the porceline out of the metal shell. Even carbide tooling had a tough time cutting the porceline. The 190D started much quicker with the parallel plugs. Sorry, I don't know where any converter bushings can be purchased. Maybe you could have some made at a maching shop but they might be very expensive. P E H |

so did the porcelain come out with carbide? did you just use a boring bar? Any hepful hints? I have been thinking about doing the same thing. I am not a tool and die maker, I build bicycle wheels, but I know how to use the lathe and mill at work. -Andy |
I just ordered the conversion kit with plugs from Foreign Automotive Parts in Flint MI. 800-728-1601. He was selling a kit on ebay. The Bosch pin glow plug with the large threads that the loop type have is numbered 80035 in large letters on the box and in small letters 0250201044. The plugs were $15 each.

Yes, I intended to say that the 82 model had the "Pin/pencil" type plugs/wire harness but the engine we installed, being that it is out of a 78 240D has the loop type plugs.... so I wish to convert the larger diameter threaded holes in the cylinder head so that I can then insert the newer type glow plugs. It would appear that I have several options: 1. direct wire from the battery a power cable with a manual switch to the existing glow plugs (loop type) and just leave them in there along with the metal resistor lines between them. 2. get the Bosch pin type plugs that have the large diameter threads and use existing 82 model's wire harness/relay system 3. get some kind of inserts made up that thread into the larger holes of the old type heads but have an inner diameter hole that will receive the new pin type glow plugs. Sounds like a no-brainer to me.......get the new plugs with the larger diameter threads.... for $60 plus the freight, I'm done with this project....... I like it!!! I think option #2 is the way to go, thinking about using the loop style plugs is going backwards. The new style are far superior in several ways.

Its been so long ago, I can't remember exactly how I made the converter bushings. You have to get all the porceline out anyway you can with carbide tooling, drill a hole thru that the pin on the new style GP will fit thru, drill out or bore out a hole that you can tap threads into that fit the new style GP threads and thats about it. But on another post here, there are pin style GP described with large threads that fit your in the holes in your engine. It would be easier to just buy and use them. P E H |
