Question Was there a difference in California with the 1984 300SD?

I've done a couple of searches and looked in a puff-piece book I've got on MB and haven't found a definitive answer. It looks like the California smog control and the trap oxidizer only became an issue in 1985.

Anyone know about 1984? I've got a BIL in So Cal who has offered to keep an eye out for a twin sis. to Hilda. I'd like to have an identical car...to make my life easy.

What about the diff. between 83 and 84?

Thanks in advance.

You are right about the '84 not having a trap but it does have some additional emissions stuff not installed in "Federal" cars that I believe is mostly EGR related. While I'm familiar only with the 123s, I think the emissions changes were pretty much the same across models. There are some additional slight differences from '83 to '84 but for the most part the '84 cars are pretty much the same. '85 is when the big changes were made, including a more advanced transmission that later appeared on the 124. As the long time owner of a California '85 123 wagon, I'd not hesitate in recommending a late, emission equiped car.

Lrg,

Have you had any tachometer problems with your CA emission model M-B? I'm trying to isolate one that I am having.

No problems so far. As I'm sure you know, the '85 has an electric tach so I guess you'll have to try tracing from the tach backwards. You may also want to take a close look at the "mother" board on the back of the instrument panel since I've heard stories of some of the dash instruments acting up if the conductive tape on the circuit board starts to delaminate.

Oh yes I do know. I was even able to find the fuse behind the glove box for it with the help of another forum. It was blown so there is a short somewhere. I haven't heard anything about checking the mother board but any suggestion is good.
Thanks!

My '84 300SD is a California delivery car that has been here its whole life. It never had a trap oxidizer, only the EGR, whose problems and solutions are well-documented throughout this site.

My 83 300D's window sticker says California model, it has EGR, but as near as I can tell that's the only difference. I've wondered about this a bit as well.

My 1984 (build date Nov. 1983) 300SD California version has the following that, I believe is different from the 1983 model:

1. Factory alarm system (anti-tow came out in 1985)
2. Air recirculating valve on intake manifold and associated vacuum lines for it.
3."Vacuum amplifier" (from where the vacuum lines come that go to the EGR and air recirculating valve) in front of the rt. inside fender.
4. Lack of vacuum valve assy. on top of engine valve cover
5. Definately no trap ox. on a 1984 CA.

The emissions vacuum diagram (on the CD and in the engine compartment) show 2,3and 4 .
