ricali, while you are trying to keep warm here is somethng to think about. I have been researching this since I got a 603 recently.
There are two versions of heads for the 603 engine, obviously MB found something to improve (everyone should know failures in the head are common and due to overeheating, if you lose a water pump and overheat it just once the head warps.) I suspect there is some reinforcement somewhere in the casting on the later rev. You may want to verify which version head you have, in case you have any cracking (not related to the problem you are having BTW) then you can address that with the head repair shop. If there is cracking in some of the small water passageways it can't be repaired. I have seen alum heads repaired, Mark DeGroff in Northridge does this for a living, its an amazing process. If I found the head from my engine shows any signs of "chicken feet" around these passageways I would be considering a new head of the latest revision at $1500 (ouch!) or I would get rid of the car. I am in process of debating removing the head from my '87, it has 250K on it and AFAIK never had the head off B4. I may be close to regretting buying a diesel with the cursed aluminum head engine I am at least going to replace the crank seal and all the gaskets I can, drop the pan and look for metal particles. If I find a bunch of loose metal its outa my life. Will take the head off Saturday and then decide what to do. The body is near mint and I don't want to give up on it that easy.
P.E.H. I'm going to York on March 5/6 to the Studebaker meet. You can have some oil them if your close by

I have this hunch that you're not outside taking the head off that car THIS weekend.
For some reason, my most major auto repairs have been required in JANUARY. Ken300D

Your right. With a high of 7and low of-10 I,ve done nothing.
Iwould really like to get the head off and see whats really wrong. Looking into parts for that engine has given me a coronary. No wonder I got the car dirt cheap. Well at least it looks good. As far as most repairs in Jan. that where I began.
