Carbon in Air Intake

i changed my air filter this weekend. is it normal to have so much carbon in the "throat" of the air intake? it is caked on there pretty thick.

Check how much blow-by you have by removing the pipe from the camcover that runs to the intake . With the engine warm it shouldn't bellow smoke , if it is then the rings are probably worn . Is the carbon dry or oily ?

Does this car have an EGR system? My 1980 model does not. If it does, then that might be soot from the EGR.
