That is very interesting....One of the forum members in India says there is a turbo kit available there for the 616. How pricey was it? Garrett must have a web page with the info, Thanks

I am also interested in the turbo 240d setup. Can you post some pictures? I know a lot of people in the UK get their Mercedes motorhomes converted from NA to turbo but there are a lot of naysayers on this board who think it will destroy the engine.

Turbodiesels are less common than normally aspirated Diesels outside the US for some reason but they are available.

I don't think any W116 was available with a 5-speed but the M110, M116 and M117 were available with 4-speed MTs for sure. The W116 300SD was a US (NorAm?) only car so those only had AT.

We coludn't have turbo diesels here in UK on W123, W124's because of the right hand steering column/box was in the way. But they were widely available in the rest of Europe. I guess MB thought it uneconomical to produce it for our market. Or maybe they thought we couldn't handle the power!!!

Most 123 diesels (including 300's)here are manual but the reverse is true of 124's.

I don't think so. Although we do only get to see the tip of the iceberg from MB, only the US got the 116 and 126 SD. I've heard that Mercedes didn't think that most Europeans would go for the unrefined OM617 in a luxury car. They did get the 140 diesels, including one with the turbocharged version of the OM606. That combination never made it here.

back to the original question.

I like the turbo ('85) and the non-turbo ('81) for different reasons. In my opinion, the 81 is more fun to drive around town or on roads where I will be running around 65 mph. The 85 obviously performs better at interstate speeds. Two totally different driving cars in my opinion, neither one a lesser car than the other.

Thumbs up

the turbo has helped me out of more than one sticky situation on the proverbial I-95

it gives you the confidence that if you want to pass that semi on the highway you can in short order...
then he can read the 'turbodiesel' badge on the rear of your car as you pull away and give you a light flash!
