The 240 as cultural touchstone...

When embroiled in a very messy dysfunctional family, workplace, society, etc., it's good to have one or two objects where one can be refreshed by their unrelieved sanity and ability to perform their functions supurbly. My 240D is one such object...a .22 Colt Woodsman, basic Rolex chronometer (dating from the days when they were simply good watches, not status symbols) and Brooks Brothers oxford cloth shirt are others.

Shame you have to indulge in time-travel to encounter these objects, as they're not being made the same way anymore.

The only two things I regert selling are my 53 356 Porsche coupe(35 years ago) and a Colt Woodsman (15 years ago), but I do still have My 115 240 D and a Browning Buckmark with a bull barrel and a red dot that will shoot ten shots in a single 3/4 inch hole if I do my part.Guess I could buy another Woodsman the classic 22 autoloader of all time.......

Touchstone = CarPusher

My Gravely two wheeled walking tractors are in that category...
Long stroke, fully pressurized oil system, screw on oil filter, cross flow breathing, all gear drive, IMPULSE MAGNETO ! ( will deliver a full spark at one rpm )... bolt on implements galore.... including this one... which will push my 240 around the yard when the motor won't....

Leathermang,

Does your Gravely have the slow wheels on it? We had 3 of these things when I was growing up and the slow wheels made it alot easier to garden with.

I suppose that you have had the vasectomy that the handles provide if you get it in a bind!

I have four of these machines in various situations.. I have the 12 Kohler engined one which has about the full range of gears available... the Gravely engined one which I got running first ( to my surprise ) was the FAST grass cutting machine.. requiring a sulky even in slow forward... but these are adaptable machines and I picked up a Slow worm gear for it on Ebay...
They are like computers ... they only do what you tell them... but they don't understand ' moderation' .. if you put it in reverse ... it is going to go backwards...you can not stop it without finding the proper gear lever or kill switch for the engine... Very unnerving the first time you find you can't remember the correct lever fast enough... But thankfully I am still Intact ....
What was really exciting was that the first time I borrowed one the guy had the levers mounted upside down.. so the ' instructions' to the machine were backwards and really unsafe...

I wonder if this attachment for the Gravely would pull an engine?

It's just SO nice when something does what

it's supposed to do, and doesn't wear out (with a little care). The 240 is one example...the tractor looks like another.
