spin on oil filter

Has anyone converted their old canister filter setup to a sipn on? Any ideas on where to start? Im looking for a fairly inexpensive solution. I think that an easier, cleaner filter chang would encourage me to do it more often, and a newer setup might clean better. I have a 76 240d.

Cleaner change

Get a package of those latex gloves at the hardware or drugstore. You won't get all greasy and grabbing the little handle is easier. ALso, use a rag and simple green if needed to wipe the top of the cannister. change that oil!

Another clean way to pull the cannister oil filter is to get a plastic shopping back and turn it inside out. Then, grab the filter handle through the bag, and pull the filter out as you're turning the bag back inside-in. Then, the filter's inside the bag and all you have to do is dispose of it properly. :)

After doing the oil a few times on my 300D, I actually prefer it to the spin-on filters...with the spin-on filters, you have to fill the filter up with oil and juggle installing it and keeping it from tilting over and spilling all the fuel out.

Just a thought...good luck! :)

The '76 has a filter out the bottom of the engine. Yous guys talking 'bout the W123/126 with the cannister at the top, it doesn't apply to byronspence's car me thinks.
I have heard there was an aftermarket device that allows a spin-on to be installed in place of the old bottom-mounted filter in the W115 cars.
If anyone has any information on where these can be had, please let me know, too!!

Byron:

You think it's bad on the 240, try the W115 300D!

I seem to remember some W123 chassis 240s having a remote oil filter, one where the top comes off. Much easier.

The problem you are going to have is that you have a dual oil filter, and the housing also contains the thermostat for the oil cooler, the bypass for the filter, and the oil pressure relief valve.

I'm not sure a spin on adapter of any kind is going to be easy. The nylon mesh part is that actual main filter, the canister portion is a bypass filter -- the oil is bled off through the bypass filter to the sump, not through the engine. Oil for the engine just goes through the nylon mesh. If yours isn't perfect, get a new one for the next oil change.

Oh yeah, was thinking it was a 123, not a 115, for some reason...

Oops! :o Sorry about that...
