240d coolant leak
1982 240d
156k miles I posted a message a few weeks ago in regards to my 240d which is leaking coolant. Thank you for the responses. I am now ready to get to work. I have attached a picture of where the drips are coming from. It was suggested that I replace the water pump. The "weep" holes on the top of water pump are not leaking. How can I tell for sure it is the water pump that needs replacing? |

"How can I tell for sure it is the water pump"
Tighten up all the hose clamps and elimanate that possabilaty than bite the bullet and get a new water pump. Be careful taking those bolts out. Do a search, lots of water pump info in the archives and its an easy job unless you have a York AC. Get back if you have any problem, I just did mine last week.

I had the same problem this week, and I also thought its the water pump. It turned out to be my Thermostat.
Although initially I suspected the water pump, I never saw it leaking. I was able to put my finger at the bottom weep hole and it was always dry. I subsequently put a Kleenex underneath the pump and left it there for a while. When I removed the Kleenex it was dry. I then put my finger below the thermostat housing and noticed it was a bit wet. I poured a bit of water on the thermostat housing and the water ended up at the exact same spot at the bottom of the oil pan where I had originally noticed the drops. When I poured a bit of water on the top of the water pump the drips ended up at a somewhat different spot on the oil pan. This pretty much eliminated the water pump and confirmed the thermostat as the source of the leak. Using the procedure above you can confirm or eliminate the water pump or thermostat as a suspects. 240 D Water pump
Thanks for the help. I successfully changed the Water Pump in about 2 hours. Would have been quicker if I hadn't snapped a bolt in the 10 degree weather. This site has been a huge help. Thanks again.
