tensioner or roller?
I have just investigated a rattle underhood of my '93 300D and noticed that the tensioner roller is out of alignment with the serpentine belt. I suspect this the the source of the noise. Is it just the roller that would need to be replaced normally, or is it common to have to replace the entire tensioning assembly?
Thanks in advance.

Only way to tell is to take the tensioner off. If it doesn't return to the normal untensioned position, it's bad and must be replaced.
The roller comes with the tensioner, I believe, so you might as well replace the tensioner to avoid hassles (such as being unable to tension the belt with the old tensioner). Peter

Click on the Fastlane button at the top of the page. If you can't find on the web interface, then call Phil at Fastlane. He has multiple sources for parts and can get stuff not listed here.
