Austin, Tejas Chassis Dyno

FYI- Colvin Automotive in Austin, has a chassis dyno.

I called them and talked at length to Daniel. he says, that they (Colvin Automotive) charge $54 for a run...they can do it pretty much any time and, more importantly, they have the much sought-after optical rpm pick-up; a necessity on diesels (coz they don't have a ignition source to determine rpm) so that the machine can calculate the torque produced by the engine.

Yeah, but it was an indeterminate test. The Colvin dyno doesn't read in negative values.

Yeah, the Dyno should not have been having to turn Toad's wheels.... I think that defeats the whole concept.....

I guess The Toad is the only other vehicle I know of with bug splatters on the rear glass......

You need to do atleast three runs. Mine showed that it loves to be somewhat hot (85-90*c) to get the best power.

Just remember to release the parking brake

I can see that it could tell you where the high point in the torque curve was...
But in comparison to a gas engine with a carb.. where you can make changes fast and check for a change...
How would one take advantage of this machine for use on our old diesels ?

Good question. First of all, it seems like that few of the changes/alterations you can do to one of these diesels will be able to be accomplished in one trip to the dyno.

ALDA adjustments are about the only thing I can think of where you could actually do a 'run-adjust-run' test. Or, you can do a with/without parking brake...but, I think someone has already performed that test.

That said, I plan to do a "before" run with the automatic transmission and an "after" run with the manual tranny.

One other interesting test would be a before/after of the air cleaner mod.

Intercooler with IP adjustment.

Or, on a 240D, we could test with and without the engine driven fan!

...or a/c on and a/c off. At least 20hp gained/lost.

I still can't find the OM617 info about that. I don't want to remove the IP just so a shop can turn a screw 1/4 CW/CCW and I don't want to be turning any screw unless I know exactly what it is.

All I can find relates to the OM603.

"I don't want to be turning any screw unless I know exactly what it is."

That is a very good attitude towards these old machines.....

1/4 and 1/2 turns CCW on Marlene's ALDA do little to improve performance and lots to enhance the exhaust plume.
