Brake Caliper Piston Question

These are ATE calipers.

There seems to have been some sort of sheet metal part that fit into the piston. On mine the inside was rotted away. I cleaned up the psiton and note that more than 75% of the pad contact point is at one level and balance at a slightly lower level.

Is the sheet metal part a shim for squel or part of the caliper and required?

Does the machined height difference need some type of part to make it level all the way around?

Thanks
Don

BIGRED,

Which car are you working on? On my W201 and W124 bodies there are some piston orientation clues in the CD manual pages, but there is no shim to correct for this feature on the piston. I believe you are correct in that the feature or shape of the piston head is designed to minimize the squealing noise. I have never had to disassemble a W123 or W126 caliper so I do not know if this is the case on those.

The sheetmetal part on my cars is a heat and dust shield for the rubber boot that goes between the piston and the caliper bore. It just clips on with friction, around the piston (has a hole in it for the piston and some clip like features that grab the piston. If yours are rotted away they should be available from FastLane or some other source like the dealer.

Good luck, Jim

Thanks for the reply....started to think it was something like that... Hope its not supper critical...as I needed it finished and put it together without it.

I will have to get the part and get it in ASAP.

Thanks
Don
