I envy you guys with winter. Snow on the ground and cold temps sound like the perfect excuse to put on the gear, fire up the snowmobile, and go it a trail. Get out there and experience winter in it's true beauty.

Anyone who lives in a warm climate and complains is just plain crazy. Cold sucks. Plain and simple. The next time I hear someone talk about the "beauty of winter" or some such drivel they can come shovel my driveway. Or how about put on 10+ layers of Carhartt gear and come help me shingle a house in subzero temps. Or try getting into your frozen-locked MB by heating the key with a Bic and inserting repeatedly it for 20minutes. If you don't have a garage you can just forget about ANY maintenence on your MB in the winter. Even with a garage the ice-cold concrete, snow melt and salt dripping in your eyes when lying under the MB ain't so great either. Now I guess if I had an inside job and paid someone to work on my cars I wouldn't care as much. I am where I am because of economics as I would suspect is the case with most of us. I have learned to deal with the cold but I will NEVER love it. So to those in the warm climates, dress loosely, wear a wide-brimmed hat, liberally apply the sunblock and bug repellent (if applicable) and enjoy a frosty beverage! My fingers are now to cold to type. RT

Yup! Raiford Prison/Florida State Penn.!! Biggest employer in the county. There is some good fruit stands here but the veggies cannot compare to those grown in the midwest for flavor. As for cold-VS heat, Spend a summer here and most change their tune. I see many people through our campground that are moving to Florida for good only to see them leave after a few months of godaweful heat. Hell i have to use a swamp cooler in the shop in the summer to cool it enough to work in. Much rather have winter and the heated Concrete floor in my shop in Illinois!

We'll i lived for 27 years in Illinois and 1 in Alaska. I may agree with you to a point as the whole eastern seaboard has TERRIBLE humidity in the winter which makes the cold worse. I was in Wisconsin at X-Mas and had -9 one morning with no wind. I walked out to crank the truck in a Flannel shirt and couldn't believe what the thermometer said!!! It wasn't cold at all. Later in the morning the wind picked up and it did get a bit chilly. Coastal Florida isn't all that bad in the summer as it gets a little breeze. All i can say is cold has never made me pass out but i have had heat exhaustion 3 times in 4 years here. My job is outside and #1 it is hard to breeth 100% humidity #2 the sun will bake you to death.

The biggest reason we want out of here is my wife and kids got allergies moving here. My wife has threatened to leave and go north without me because she is miserable. She has had allergy tests done and is allergic to most everything in Florida. She gets 2 allergy shots a week but they don't seem to help much. Also do not want to bring my kids up in a state known for the worst school system in the usa. The school there in now SUCKS and the closest priveate school is 30 miles 1 way.

Lived in Los Angeles until i was 14. Moved to Manitoba, Canada. It was great, made me appreciate the cold. Only problem is its a pain to get the car fixed, no mechanics around (small town called Brandon). Moved back down here when I was 17. Not so much more appreciation, there's traffic, and I don't like the whole atmosphere as much. Went back for 18th birthday. Had a helluva time snowmobiling and freezing my ears off I would love alternate back and fourth every few years, makes you really appreciate the seasons.

Well, with 8 inches of "white death" on the ground--actually on the driveway, walks and roads, I better go shovel. But because of the low temps, at least its the dry, light stuff. (That really wet snow that we get when the temp gets near freezing is the stuff that causes heart attacks because it is so heavy.) The worst is coming later this afternoon and overnight....the forecast is for freezing rain! I guess I better take advantage of today's relatively nice weather to get into work for a few hours--I work as an engineering technician/inspector with a fair amount of independence--not an office job. I keep my own time, but have to get all my daily logs to the accounting people today or I don't get paid on time. I really don't expect them to even show up, but if my time records aren't in, it'll be an excuse for delaying my check.
Why are all accounting female types b*tches? I understand they have a job to do, but its their job! And they are generally whinney, too. end of rant

I dont know how you do it, must be youth.....since I was around fiftyish, a couple fingers on each hand loose circulation and turn white when I,m out working for long periods in freezing weather. I would have to look for cars to wrench on in the tropics someplace

My brother gave up a great sales career in Stuart out of concern for his son's education. He moved to the northwest and is quite happy now. One of my good buddies and his wife just moved from St. Pete to Boston. After graduating from law school, he couldn't stand Florida anymore. Told me it was a "destitute land of drugs, strip malls and hicks". (not my opinion, his)

I always enjoyed getting out of the cold and visiting my brother. Back in our single days, we'd head down to Miami and whoop it up!

I don't get it. Every year I celebrate Thanksgiving, honoring the Pilgrims who would weather the tough New England winter. And every Christmas, I'm overwhelmed with Currier and Ives snow-and-sleigh cards hailing the harsh New England freeze.

Now I hear Northeasterners complain about biting-cold weather during the dregs of January. What gives? It's SUPPOSED to be cold up there, just like it's supposed to be 105 degrees in Los Angeles each and every summer.

I'd like to hear from someone in Duluth, Minn., which got 19 inches of snow today. Now THAT's winter.

It's interesting to read all of your posts regarding the winter weather woes. In Canada for basically 95% of us winter is cold, period. For the other 5% that live in Vancouver and southern Vanouver Island on the West coast their sense of reality to seasons is somewhat skewed, but that's a different topic.

I live in the eastern shadow of the Rockies just West of Calgary, Alberta. Our winters of late have been somewhat mild, but as a Canadian one expects to have at least 6 to 8 weeks of our normally five months worth of winter tempuratures to be like it is today:
Current Temperature: -30°C ( -30 degree Celsius = -22 degree Fahrenheit)
Barometer: 103.1 kPa

Wind Speed: 7 km/h NE Humidity: 0%

I live about a 12min walk from my house to my office, and to start my car and drive it here would be futile. The thing wouldn't even melt the ice on the windshield before I get here.

I bundle up so alls you can see are my eyes, I arrive with a layer of frost all over the front of my touque and scarf.

No, it's not enjoyable, nor do I look forward to doing it every day. But, I'm free to do it if I want to, or not. I can relocate or stay, it's my choice. I love winter more than any other season because of the extremes of nature, and the beauty of the Rocky mountains, the snow covered landscapes, and the frost encrusted trees. Yes, spring is also a very visually beautiful season as well, but IMO winter is the most striking. Winter is for play only I think, 'cause to work or commute in it, is truly apt to drive one crazy with frustration.

Each and every day of your life is a gift, appreciate it nomatter where you are and what the weather is doing to you.

Thirsting/starving to death in the desert is probably no different or worse than freezing to death with a full belly and a fat wallet.

My $.02

I just live with the cold. I don't have much of a choice I was born up here and my family has always lived up here. When I graduate college I want to move down south. But once you get out of the New York/New England area good job opportunities can be hard to come by.
