I didn't feel like driving to the gym today, as the roads are horrible. I broke out the shovel and spent an hour or so clearing the walk and driveway. A great workout and I got to enjoy the outdoors!

BTW: Telecommbrkr, great post!

"Winter makes you appreciate summer more. Imagine living in the tropics all your life. You wouldn't appreciate that."

I, for one of millions, do appreciate living in the tropics. Comfort is high on my list these days. It's been warm enough to ride a motorcycle on Christmas Day in my shirt sleeves every year but this one. It rained.

My old "Mock Turtle", an 84 300Dt, starts in less than a second any day or night. No salt, no rust, no gelled diesel.

OK, call me a puss, but when the temperature drops below 55 I start humming Calypso songs and thinking aboot Antigua.

The only ice I want to deal with is floating in my drink.

I lived 4 years in Hi and after that I "commuted" to a job 4 mos on and 4 mos off in the tropics for another 4 years. (5 1/2 degrees S. latitude) And I could hardly wait to get back to the PNW full time. After while its like,.. get up every morning...Ho Humm... another beautiful day..BFG. You get whats commonly known as "Polynesian paralyzes" The weather is not a consideration (except to much wind) and you dont appreciate it afterwhile. Not to say I couldnt use a LITTLE shot of the tropics this time of year.

I am forty something, so it is not youth.

Hello Steve
I am forty something, so it is not youth.
More like mule stubborn determination to get the job done.
I am in the Rolls-Royce Owners Club and have passed up offers to wrench on cars in the tropics.
Does that prove I am nuts?
The funny part is that I do not enjoy snow or sports.
Have a great day.

Every place has its pluses and minuses.

I happen to love snow (especially using snowmobiles for target practice in black powder season ). But, I also love swimming at the local water hole in the summer.

Hate mosquitos....that's why I only visit my father in Minnesota in the autumn, winter or spring. The skeeters in VT aren't NEARLY as big nor nasty. (Winter is the best 'cause then we go dog sledding! Nothing better than being on an empty sled pulled by 8 dogs when they get sight of a moose. MUCH better than snowmobiling...especially since dogs don't run out of gas before you're home and you can cuddle up with them if you get stuck in a storm. You've got to deal with a serious scent-of-dog, though.)

Don't like jellyfish much, either, but if I lived in the tropics, I'd deal.

I think the desert in the SW is beautiful, but there have been times I've gotten out of my car and taken a big, deep breath of that air scented with chapparrel and realized why it is also called "creosote bush".

The high plains are spectacular to me, but they are a little dry.

Love the open ocean. But, freezing fogs and 24 hour watches with a small hatchet suck.

Choose yer poison.

Hmmm. Maybe the endless rain here ain't so bad as I thought this morning. 45 today. Not bad. They say the big differerence between summer and winters here is the clouds are higher in the summer. Usually can see the mountains in summer. Not so in winter when clouds are right down to the deck.
Other than that not much difference at all, a few degrees, and longer daylight. Nice. Wish it was Fourth of July now. Just like last year, Sat out in the 50's and watched the fireworks, up in the clouds they flew....

A question for you in the North West US

I work in the construction support industry ( inspections and engineering). Outside construction normally stops when it rains. How do you perform outside construction activities when it rains almost every day?

Brr...

It's -32.5°C here this morning (that's -26.5°F )... so no more complaining about 0°F (that would seem tropical right now!)
