Do not just connect the breather hose from the top of the valve cover to the oil drain tube going back to your crankcase. It WILL create pressure build up in your engine and cause oil leaks like you can't imagine.

If I understand the question?

Hello kmaysob
If I understand the question?
You seem to want to "remove the oil mist separator" which drains (via the loose tube) to the crankcase and vents the remaining blow-by gasses for ingestion by the engine.
If this is what you are trying to do; do NOT do it, crank case pressure will blow out your seals/gaskets, blow-by gasses also carry a small amount of engine oil to the turbo and cylinders for added lubrication, it will run for a while without this, but your engine life will suffer.

OK everyone, what he is asking is if he can hook the drain FROM THE BOTTOM OF THE AIR CLEANER (the ONLY thing with an O-ring in it) to the DRAIN TUBE TO THE OIL PAN.

The answer is YES, you CAN hook those directly with a tube since that accomplishes the same thing as the drain with an O-ring attached sitting in the drain tube.

kmaysob, to answer your question, YES, do it.

KMAYSOB,

You can connect the oil drain at the bottom of the air cleaner directly to the oil pan using 5/8" heater hose and a couple of hose clamps. When I did this to my 83 the oil leaks stopped completely. I wound the hose towards the fender to get around the turbo and exhaust manifold. Will do the same thing on my 84 when stuff starts melting up here.

to beat a dead horse.... no way! in his first post, he ask's if the oil drain tube connects directly with the breather hose inside the air cleaner, or if it vents to the intake. so, when he says, can i just hook the two up directly with a hose, he wants to completly bypass the nipple with out the o-ring

He asked two questions, you're not reading the text in between.

Hey guys, I'm into my second 84 300d tonight and I don't remember the drain tube (the one we are discussing on this thread that leads from the bottom of the air cleaner to the TOP of the oil pan near the rt front of the car) being loose AFTER the air cleaner is removed.

Is there a bracket or support that may be missing? I can align the air cleaner "down" nozzle and put everything back together but when the air cleaner is removed the tube can easily be moved around. Is this correct?

No, the tube should be rigid, there's a bracket welded onto it that conns with one of the mount bolts into the block. If you can get under it, look at all the motor mount bolts at the block, it's one of the top ones, the bracket should be obvious. 17 or 19mm socket to tighten, but getting to it might be a chore with the turbo in the way.
