240D eng swap question

No, I,m not putting in a 300D, a much easier question. It looks to me like you can pull the engine with the oil cooler and hoses all hooked up and likewise dropping in the new engine? The two swaps I have done were Euro so I didn't have to mess with an o/c.

When I pulled the motor out of my 240D I unbolted the Oil cooler from the radiator and just swung it up out of the way when I took the engine out. The motor I put in didn't have any oil in it, so I unbolted the lines at the cooler and put the cooler and radiator in as a unit, then hooked up the lines and added oil.

good luck

Thanks... It seems I can pull oil cooler, hoses and all out togather with the engine , just tie off the oil cooler to the front of the engine. I guess it will all be apparent when I get to doing it.
Have a good day

when handling the

oil cooler with lines attached be very very careful. it is aluminum and the fitting attachments at the cooler are extremely fragile. with the huge nuts built in they look strong but are very easy to break.

personally, i think i would prob take the lines off and do it separately. and i wouldnt run wo one either, unless i knew i was only driving around town.

they put the cooler on because of our interstates.

So the euro 300d will have fittings on the filter housing for the 240's oil cooler lines, then? Thanks for sharing the wisdom.

Yes..the 240 and 300 use the same O/F housing.

Tom "they put the cooler on because of our interstates."

I think not, they have freeways in the "old country" too.

i understand that

but then why would they offer a euro car wo oil cooler?

and euro doesnt necessarily mean germany, right? i dont know where an oil cooler would not be needed, finland, maybe? they want the oil to get warmer?

and even though they have autobahns in germany, the distances traveled in one bite are generally a lot less than here.

Tom

I dont know why Euro 240Ds dont have oil coolers but even in the warm parts of the country its not a problem. I've traviled in Ca in the hottest summers. My conclusion is 240Ds dont need them no matter where they are.

I have seen a few euro 240Ds and none had O/Cs

I wouldnt swear to it but I think it was Larry that stated he has driven many K without an oil cooler, I know one of our members from Texas has.

One thing for sure, with no oil cooler or hoses in the way its allot easier to do IP swaps, or motor mounts

I've heard a few theories about why US 240s have O/Cs but ....anybody know for sure???

Perhaps DOT required them? Probably not, but... how about adding a selling point that they'd already machined for? By slapping an OC on them, they get to add that point to the literature. My 240, when it ran, ran super cool.

Oil coolers

My 84 Euro 240 has no oil cooler .... not to forget, it's much cooler in Europe than it is here -- look how far behind they were in AC design .....

I live in Florida, however, and the lack of a cooler has given me food for thought ..... can I just swap in a cooler & filter housing from any 123 so equipped??

I think so, if you meant off a 616 or 617 engine equipped with one.
