This is my first winter with anything but 15w40 dino rotella in the engine....I am now a Mobil 1 5w40 turbodiesel synthetic user. Coldest it's been so far up here is 22F one morning, glowed for about 7 seconds, cranked over 1 time and it was running smoothly, pretty awesome. I can tell that the oil lets it crank over quicker, it sounds a lot less strained. Same goes for our '83...it has the 0w40 mobil 1 in it, and it cranks right up in the cold temps. Plus I have 5 new glow plugs as of the middle of August....I had one die so I opted to just change all of them Couple that with my extended glow relay (keeps them on for 3 mins once its running) and it runs smooooooth.

Nothing beats the MB block heater. Your 1000w coolant heater draws more than twice the power to do the same job and loses heat out through the radiator. The MB block heater delivers heat directly where you need it and does an AWESOME job. 1 hour on the MB block heater gets my '83 240D started at -20F no problem. 2 hours and it starts like its July. Back when I was an apartment dweller I had a 12v marine deepcycle battery I used to power an inverter and run the heater. After one hour my battery was still at ~60% capacity. I used this setup over 3 winters with no issues except at one point the cord to the heater frayed apart right at the block. Replaced it and all was well again. If you needed more capacity you could get 2 batteries. If you were really slick you could install the battery so the car charged it as you drove. If you were really really slick you could set it up so the cord to the block heater was already connected and a remote car start system put power to the inverter with the push of a button from inside the house!

The best engine heater I ever had was a 1500 watt tank type heater. The hot water output of the heater went right into the head where the combustion starts in an indirect injection Diesel engine and the engine started easily.

Another advantage of a high powered heater is that it has to be left turned on for a much shorter period of time so I had a shorter wait time. It is actually more efficient because it has to be energized for a much shorter period of time. No heat is lost thru the radiator because the thermostat is closed.

I had a 220D that had the rings "cooked" by overheating I.E. low compression, and it wouldn't start cold even in the summer. That 1500 watt heater would get that engine started even in the winter.

I have a heated garage now where my car will spend the cold winter nights. No block heater needed! Its always 55F+ in my car's world. Except at work in the parking lot....oh well....it will start.

Ahem.. my espar gets the block, radiator, heater core all to 80C in 20 minutes on well under a tenth of a gallon of k1. No plug in needed.

Oh man, I'm jealous of that, the difference is how much your espar cost! Do you have the keyfob remote for yours? That'd be awesome, hit the button and 20 minutes later have a nice warm engine... Someday when the wife and I drive cross country in a 300TD I'll equip it with one of those.

I'll second that. My '79 SD had one of them when I purchased it. I have no idea how they plumbed it around the Servo....

When it went I was in a hurry so I just had a block heater installed. Was about as good for starting but of course a longer wait for heat on winter mornings.

Copied

This related data is from Cold weather starting links

Diesel fuel "JELLING" occurs inside the injection pump, fuel filter, fuel lines and fuel tank.

Many of the fuel system pre-heaters used for vegetable oil conversion, are actually designed/manufactured for "ARCTIC" condition DIESEL equipment...

FYI

There have been many weird engine block heater designs used through the years for various applications/manufacturers.
