I don't think that I have seen an 80 octane pump since the late 80's. 80/87 and 100/130 were replaced by 100LL years ago. And now they claim 100LL is short for the program.

Guess I'm showing my age. Started flying in 1978. And haven't done much General Aviation flying since getting with the airlines (1984). I'm not even current SEL.

That wouldn't make it over many of the highway passes in Colorado.

http://www.thielert.com/ I think there's a Diesel radial engine sitting at the airport I frequent. I'll have to check it out next time I'm there...

It would probably scream past the Geo Metro running on 2/3 of its engine I had to take over there several years ago.

LOL, well it was screaming at about 50 mph by the time it got to the top. I have to do it again tomorrow morning, I'm heading back to SoCA for a couple of weeks and the 300D is still looking for an engine.

Of course, aircraft, ships, towboats, and yachts don't have to pay the road tax which, here in Pa. is around $.50 per gal.
even if the reason is not "accurate" it looks like he nailed it right there...

I suspect a bigger problem is the relative popularity of diesel in Europe, where the tax structure favors it. They have so much demand that they can't refine enough and are importing finished diesel from refineries in the U.S., which drives up demand. The refinery infrastructure here is largely optimized for making gasoline; part of the fraction that would have once been diesel is now cracked into gasoline, instead, which further reduces supply.
