Axle Replacement

83 300D
OK, it's not a bad looking job. It's snow and cold. I know a place that can probably do the axle replacement for me. He doesn't care about me bringing in the parts. What's a fair + cost for this?
100, 200, 300?? I'm going to assume the shafts will not come out easy. I've seen the shop with 850IL and a 600 MB (new 12 cyl) being worked upon. It is essentially a Sunoco station with service. They've done work for me before on a Jeep and although it took a full season to fixc, it was done OK.
How much should this job run? It's my beater and I want it back. Ugly as sin but runs OK. I want to do both axles as they are both split boots and the car is making a LOT of noise.
It's way too cold forme to do it.

Do both axles at one time. Once you have opened up the diff, you've done most of the work. Don't buy the cheap axles that have the joints welded back on.

I bought my rebuilt units from CVJ Axles in Denver. They don't reweld the ends, they look for good axles that need new boots. CVJ is on the internet. About $145 per axle plus shipping. This is not a bad job for a DIY, just takes some time. Its a bad job if its winter outside and you don't have a garage to work in.

The end bolts that hold the axles "into the wheel bearings" should be replaced when you swap the axles. Find yourself a good bolt supplier, much less than the dealer. I filled my diff back up with synthetic. Also installed a magnetic drain plug from a 1970's era MB manual trans. That was probably the best value MB dealer part I have ever purchased. I think it was around $12?

You'll need a 14mm hex drive. I would suggest you look for one with a 1/2" drive. I bought a Proto from Grainger because Sears didn't carry it and the Snap-On was too much $$. Open the fill plug FIRST before you open the drain plug. Otherwise if you can't get the fill plug open your stuck.
