Thumbs up congratulations!

Looks like you got a great car at a fair price. I like the suggestion of having a California member pick up the car for you. I'm sure someone would be willing to do this. If not, have your bank/credit union act as an escrow agent as was suggested earlier.

Good luck!!

BTW, I'm a gambler, too. I won this on eGay yesterday http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2457319146&ssPageName=ADME:B:EOAB:US:6. I'm a little worried about the seller; he's unhappy with the final selling price of the car and is demanding that he be paid in full no later than Wednesday (in accordance with his auction rules). Only problem is my credit union is in Portland, Oregon and I'm......here. I'm trying to get it completed, but I get the feeling this guy'll sell the vehicle out from under me if my payment is so much as 5 minutes late.
Jim,
That's a mighty fine car! Let's hear how it works out for ya!

Better use Fed Ex priority overnite to get your payment there.
BTW that is the color my wife's 83 300D is painted, very conservative and the paint is of excellent quality, it holds up extemely well. MB's metallic paints started in 84 and 85 used a new paint delivery system to please the environmental concerns ... and came out with some of the worst paint in their history. Too bad they didn't learn this from Ford.

I plan on sending it Express Mail (the Post Office is just across the street from my credit union here). I've dealt with eBay sellers who've had fairly stringent sales terms listed in their ads, but I've never once had anyone just flat refuse me extra time when I've explained myself (I didn't get a 100% feedback rating for nothing).

At any rate, the car was supposedly owned by an older couple (who only drove it on Sundays......TO THE RACE TRACK) who had it maintained by the local M-B dealer. The M-B dealer did the headlight conversion (the originals are boxed up in the trunk of the car), replaced all of the belts, hoses, etc. It's supposed to have full log books and all receipts back to day one. We'll see.

The seller is primarily an automobile wholesaler who's testing the waters on eBay. He sells a small number of vehicles at retail on his local market and thought he'd get a better price on the internet, hence his disappointment (he let me know that the bidders below me have already contacted him about buying the car if I'm late, or whatever). I talked to a few other people who are acquainted with him (dealers, wholesalers, car haulers, etc.) and seem to think he's a reputable individual. However, I was also able to look him up via the BBB and found that of two complaints filed against him since December of 2002, he has only resolved one (considering the numbers of vehicles he wholesales for GMAC and to/from other dealers and wholesalers, it may not mean much).

I'll post back that either:
  • the seller jerked me around.
  • the car SUCKS.
  • the car is GREAT!!!!

Jim,

What did a Carfax check find, if any?

Regards,

Tom

Jim and Scotty,

Both great cars at good prices. There is hope for Ebay after all.

btw, if someone puts up a no reserve auction, I don't think they have any right to be pissy if the car doesn't make them the money they want it to. Of course they will anyway, but its their problem......

Carfax didn't show much, just three records which the seller verified (he also ran a check which will be included with the title and other paperwork): original title with lien, lien release, and sale to the current party.

Those are my sentiments, too. Life is tough for some people I guess.

Okay, thanks, just curious.

Good thing the CarFax matches the owner's documents.

Also, often the older cars such as this have inoperative odo's.
Sold as TMU, however in Illinoise I believe there is no requirement
to verify miles on a vehicle >10 years old.

The requirement is the same in Oklahoma, too. It'll receive an odometer exempt title when I tag it here.

Incidentally, got a call from the seller earlier, who indirectly, but politely, asked me about the payment. Said the car hauling outfit contacted him and they have a driver ready to pick up the car tomorrow (and if I don't act, it'll be sometime next week before another can make the pick up). Got on the telephone to my wife and she was able to get the cashier's check Express Mailed (USPS guarantees delivery by noon tomorrow). I'm gonna owe that woman BIG TIME before this is all said and done.

I'm gonna owe that woman BIG TIME. . .

She probably already factored that in (like she will probably want to drive it!?)

BTW, you are way ahead with all the records and log books on the car, this info will be useful to see what has (and has not) been done to the car. This is quite an exception to what most dealers do. They usually want to destroy any records, lest a potential buyer think a Mercedes will be a high maintenance car or something!
I think you found a good one!

Drive it? HA!!! If only. I figure there'll be some demure request (i.e., an iron fist in a velvet glove) for jewelry, Pergo floors, a vacation, or something else that costs more than the car. This car ain't sounding to be too good of a deal now!!!

ebay rippoff, not yet anyway

well the latest on the "ebay" coupe: the seller went ahead & sent overnite the signed title to me, & then I will overnite the cert.check. Very trusting I must say, however he still has the car!, (possession is 9ths of the law they say). So after he recieves the check then they will load it for the trip home, (I hope). I will keep you posted, thanks for your thoughts!

Well, Scotty? Updates?

I received the title for my eBay car on Monday and the hauler picked the up the vehicle the same day (Monday morning). The seller called me and said that the driver expected to deliver on Thursday (just forty-eight short hours from now).
