116
Old, crusty 300 SD vegie burner getting 25-30 MPG on 50% mix. Lots of issues with past owner stupidity.

There are three bodies I like: w115, w116, and w123.
Right now we have a w116 (first MBZ, first diesel). It does seem like I am in the minority. The HVAC just started acting up and I am going to convert it to manual controls and do a write up about it. |

You need a diesel wagon to go with that turbo wagon....

I really like the looks of the w116, and hear great things about the ride.

Get an electronic heater control valve and associated potentiometer from http://www.vintageair.com/. It is in their catalog under "replacement parts" for their own solutions. Also get their blower motor control switch. EDIT- Their are also knobs and labels you can/should buy. Then get some (three?) "EGR Vacuum Solenoids" from a GM vehicle. They are used to control the EGR valve. Their input is like that of a fuel injector, but since we will always want the open or closed (and not somewhere inbetween) you can control them with a simple switch. Now just get some (four?) switches (you will need one for the AC aswell). I was going to mount all of the controls to a piece of brushed stainless steel that would go right where the original controls went. |

cost of the project?
Now i am really excited to see your results. I would bet many people in this forum, including W116, W107, and W123 owners would love to get rid forever of the cursed Chrysler ACII!!!! and have a simple straight forward manual climate control. The challenge here is gonna be to not make it look ghetto.

I plan to use GM "EGR Vacuum Servos." I have been studying the manual and it looks like you need four of them. I think I found one place that sold them for ~$12 a piece. You will also need some vacuum hose, some mounting hardware for the vacuum servos, some sort of switch(es) to control the servos (EDIT- and your AC), and somewhere to mount all of the controls. I plan to replace the current black piece of plastic with a piece of brushed stainless steel (sheet metal folded down on all four edges). That will look good enough for me. I think the whole conversion will run you less than any part in that stupid system. Note: some of this is from memory, I could be wrong. But this is my idea, have at it. Quote:
