84 300td alternator removal

Does one actually have to remove the entire mounting bracket including the silly little tensioner to get the alternator out of this car?Should be a 1 hour job with no frozen bolts but its got me stumped with the sun going down fast on the mean cold streets of nyc.Got to be an easier way!Help!
thanks
sk

Take out the fasteners that you loosen when you tension the belts and the alternator will slide out.

nope,captive tensioner

Sorry but that would be a normal alternator of which I have removced dozens. This mount system incorporates a threaded rod held captive by the mounting bracket This tensioner rod prevents one from removeing the top mount bolt.Truly mystifying good thing I have a cutting torch I guess

Isn't there a nut at the other end of it? If I remember correctly you remove the nut and that whole fastener/piece comes out? Maybe I am forgetting something?

I learned some new words when I did mine. Like most things, you'll eventually get through it.

You're not the only one who thinks that adjusting rod is one goofy piece of engineering. Get rid of it and use the tried and true method of prying out the alternator to get the right tension. That adjusting bolt is a royal pain in the ass when it comes to installing new belts. They are even more of a pain on the MB vans. An MB engineer had way too much time on his hands with that design.

I've had that adjustment bolt out and back in...no torch or dremel required.
I suggest some more study of the part.

We may be talking about two different adjustment bolts. There is one which has a threaded rod welded to it and the rod goes thru a long nut, there is another with a star wheel at the bolt head. I think the one with the star head is easy to remove. The threaded rod not so easy. I believe the threaded rod is the early one and the star wheel the later.

1984, 617 engine, long thin threaded rod attached to the head of a long adjustment bolt that rides in two slots in the upper alt. bracket.

I recently had this apart to straighten and rethread the thin rod and I also painted the steel bracket gray. I don't remember it being a big problem.

First. you have to loosen the 3 bolts at the back of the alternator.
Then you can adjust the tensioning bolt to loosen the altenator.

Go to this site and look at job 13-340. It shows diagrams, pictures and how to adjust the alternator.
