NOISE from rear-end!
With-in the past week, my car has developed a grinding sound from the rear end on the passenger side. Tonight, for the first time (on a stone-cold car) the grinding turned into a whining that changed with speed. It starts between 20 and 25 mph and lessens the closer you get to 45 mph. Once I got the car up over 50 and warm, the noise stopped.
My old man tells me is sounds like brakes... I tell him he is crazy. My guess is rear bearing or possibly diff. Any thoughts please?

#1. Brakes, check first.
Hello 190D22
A grinding sound from the rear end on the passenger side. #1. Brakes, check first. #2. Bearing, check while inspecting brakes. #3. Differential, take it to a mechanic to confirm.

Change out your differential fluid, swirl a magnet around in the old fluid and see if you pull out any chips or metal dust....
Add Slick50 gear treatment into the differential just on principle.. |

Leathermang, I've read to many studies on the Slick 50 snake oil for engines - what does the gear oil do?

Slick 50 eh? I've not heard of it before. I'll take a look into it. Thanks!
Since the ambient temperature has risen lately, the noise has gone away. So with it being temperature related, this even more leads me to believe it is lubrication problems.

Get going at a nice steady speed when the noise is the loudest. Apply pressure to the brakes. If the noise changes, it is the brakes. If not, I would guess the bearings.

slick 50 gear lube
I used this stuff on two different Toyota's that developed excessive whine at speed.... one at about 150k and the other at 200k..... I did nothing else than add this stuff.... the noise went away in 300-500 miles from both.... one of them we sold at 280k and I know it was still going three years later....the trend up until I added it was Louder and Louder.... they were so loud that I was using ear plugs out on the road with one of them.. ( not much sound deadening .... and it was a station wagon... so the noise was in there bouncing around with me.....
I know about the ' snake oil ' legal complaints the government acted on.... with regards to performance in internal combustion engines ( although on our lawnmower engines I always used it and am convinced it worked .....) However on things like gears when I look at different sources I see this stuff almost exclusively stocked in the lube category. It is the slickest stuff they know of and I see no reason that it would not work for lubrication purposes... |
