looking at a 240

I am going to look at a 240d today that seller says won't start. He says it turns over, but won't start. I asked what he has tried to do for it and he said "nothing". What could I, as a very new DIY'er, do to see if thing will start? Thanks

If it were me, I'd take a fresh battery, or another source for juice.
I'd crack an injector line at the injector and see if there was fuel present when cranking. If I had fuel, then I's use my ohmeter to see if the glow plugs had the proper resistance, and voltage when they are supposed to come on.
In a diesel, unless there is a mechanical problem, all you need is good glow plugs and fuel.

Stop by the dealership and buy a spare strip fuse for the glow plug relay. And carry a fresh battery as stated above. Check the primer pump - if it is the old style that has to be screwed down and is leaking fuel out, then it is probably leaking air in.

LOL---I know---I'm thinking 300 bucks for it. He is asking 600. I bet I could get it for 3. Then I just have to get it home somehow. I can bring my 300 which has a good battery and a brand new strip fuse. Never cracked an injector before. What about the starter? I'm leaving soon to go look. ohm meter, socket for injector, strip fuse and battery...anything else? I do have two new glow plugs...Are they easier to put in then the 300 or the same?

I just posted that for PEH, who is out of socket in Florida right now... LOL
I would not get it running without a written agreement as to price from him.... If you do get running you are pretty much going to have to give him the $600.. ... because with it running he can get that from someone else....

I'm leaving to look right now---I need new tires and this supposedly has new tires---if the tires are good I'm gonna offer 300, and not even worry about trying to start it. I have a friend nearby where I could have it towed for not much money. I'll let you know how it looks.

What a POS. Nothing was good on the car, except maybe the manual transmission. What a shame.

What a bummer!! Don't you just wonder what people see when they look at a car they wish to sell? If the seats are torn, and the floors are rusty, every body panel has dents and the paint is bad you'd think they might notice. But after all, it is a Mercedes! Someone will surely leap at this old rust bucket.
Car salesmen have an expression, " All buyers are liars!"; looks like sellers are liars, too. Maybe its easier to think everyonne is a liar until you can verify he speaks the truth.
Sorry, it didn't work out.

There's a goofy guy I work with who has a running, roadworthy non-turbo 300D for sale -- $350. He cut the muffler off of it, the driver's window is broken, the trunk leaks, the windshield leaks, and the sunroof needs help when closing it. If interested, I can give you his pager number and email address. The car was this guy's daily driver until the window was broken.

How cheap can you get it ? The manual trans/clutch assembly/etc are a pretty desirable item for someone out there...as a whole car it would be a gem for someone wanting a manual in a 617 powered car...

I didn't talk price. If someone had a 240 engine that they could put in it, I think it could be a good deal. Actually the body was nice. I can give phone number to anyone who is interested in the tranny or the whole car. Glow plug light came on, and appeared to be working, but I didn't bring my meter. Turned over, but no start. There was no coolant reservoir. I asked him if he had cracked the injectors and he replied "I don't know how many times I told you...it needs a new engine." He wasn't the friendliest of guys. Very small dealer...He had a 190D also...didn't look at it. He wasn't interested in talking diesels...just wanted to make a sale. I'll post the phone number if anyone is interested. I would think he'd go 300-400 bucks. If I had the knowledge or the money I'd put that manual in my 300D.

How bad of shape was it really in? If he couldn't get the car to run, he probally didn't put much effort in making it look that good. It's not too hard to get these cars to look nice again, unless they are total rust buckets. BTW, The engine shouldn't have a coolant reserve either... I'd kill for a 240D, and $300-$400 would be a great price, even if it wasn't in the best condition...

I think I want a 240 also, but not this one. The car wouldn't start. The body was nice---no rust, no dents. Dash cracked, front seats ripped, but not too saggy. No sunroof. No antenna. 3 new tires---no name brand. He bought the car from an auction. I didn't spend too much time there like I said. If you want the number let me know. I'm moving to Bremerton at the end of the year...you anywhere near there?
