Alternator Voltage - Went through the roof?

The other day I was driving in the rain for the first time since owning the car. (So Cal Weather )

I noticed that the wipers when set to high seemed to be going super fast and even faster, the faster I drove. I was going to do a post about the wipers, but soon into my drive my battery light came on and went on and off and then remained off. Last night I didn't have one headlight and both high beams were out. Fuse or short I thought. It was neither. I pulled one headlight to check it and it was cooked. I also noticed the reserve light and battery light had a very faint glow.

Having a newer rebuilt alternator in my parts car I swapped it and the dash lights went back to normal. Replaced the headlights and all seems fine now.

I can only assume that the alternator was pumping out way to much voltage and cooked the headlights and I think my clock.

As a side note, I check the regulator and the brushes looked fine.

Don

Likely a bad regulator. Something in the electronics is probably fried. You'll need to replace the whole regulator, which is fortunately not a big deal.

I just replaced my regulator. It is located on the rear of the alternator. Two screws hold it on. The new one will have a new set of brushes attached. Took about 5 minutes.

Darn....

I guess the 126 wiper blades were not designed to do 5 swipes per second?...lol

Don

p.s. Having a spare alternator...I just replaced the whole unit.
