Help! Need top Radiator Tank!

For an 81 300SD. The neck is broke and nothing wants to glue it together again. Anyone got a used one? Just the top tank. Radiator is in fine shape.

From what I hear, the tabs that hold the top tank to the core don't work so well the second time. Try it but keep your good eye on the temp gauge and your good nostril alert for the smell of coolant.

Are you talking about the upper part of the radiator ( plastic ) or a seperate plastic tank attached to the radiator by a hose ?

i assume you are talking about the coolant reservoir.

my 240d did not come with one so i got an aftermarket one from the local Advance Auto. there are two sizes. i got the smaller one for about $6.

People wanting to add this to their system may need to check the type radiator cap they are using...There may be a difference which would need to be addressed in order for the new unit to function as an ' air remover' .... which is helpful for cooling.

Save yourself some pain and just buy a new radiator.

The likelyhood that you can remove the top tank and replace it without breaking the aluminum core "tabs" is nil.

I know, I ended up with a new rad on the Volvo, same thing. Luckily, the nipple broke in the drive, cold engine, instead of on the highway like my sisters.

Well, Peter, that is sorta pessimistic from a forum dedicated to DIY stuff..... LOL
How about this ?...... With your warning that those are a very hard thing to keep from messing up in the usual disassembly way.... could they be drilled around or cut around and the rest of the plastic taken off.... since it will not be used anyway... and then carefully take off the plastic associated with that tab ?

Anyway, clearly many people ' like the pain'.... LOL
But if it is ' trash' anyway it won't hurt to try taking it apart giving special consideration to those tabs....

When mine broke, I found a piece of metal tubing that fit inside the plastic and used "JB-Weld" over the entire inside surface of the plastic to the metal. I first, wire brushed the inside of the plastic to insure a good bond. Even though this may seem mickey mouse, the repair never failed.
