Another oil question

As mentioned previously, I purchased a 1983 300d, turbo with 123,000 miles.

Service records and previous owner states that he has always used Castrol GTX 10w40, summer and winter. The engine is tight and it doesn't miss a beat.

My question is, is there any reason to change. It's worked so far.

Thanks and sorry for another oil thread!

Re: Another oil question

A geographic location, where it came from and where are you, would help answer this.
Florida to Florida has one answer.
Florida to Alaska has another.
Have a great day.

I'm sure you'll hear this enough, but in cold climes, synthetics really shine for their wide viscosity range. Try a 5W40 synth in a CF rated oil (I'd suggest getting away from the 10W40 and such as they supposedly have the most additive of any blend and it's probably NOT a CF -diesel- rated oil.)

If you can afford $5/quart, use Delvac 1. If you can't afford that, try Rotella T Synthetic at $13/gal at Wally World (some will complain that it's not a "true" synth, but at least it's 5W40 oil - better than running a pure Dino at 15W40 in the winter!)

If you must do Dino oil, go with Delvac 1300, the moly does help with start-up lube.

PS. Oil has been discussed till it is coming out our ears, you should be able to search on it here and come up with WAY more than you could read in this lifetime!

Mobil's got a new Truck & SUV 5w-40 that's diesel rated, sold for $5 a quart at Autozone. I'd bet dollars to doughnuts it's the same formula as Delvac 1.

Hmmm..., didn't know that. Maybe I'll check it out. Would be nice to have a local source of Delvac 1 (only at truck stops far away and comes out to about $5.75 quart).

It would also be nice to have a spare quart in the DIY box instead of a whole gallon container as Delvac 1 is currently sold in.
