300D won't hold in 1st gear

My father has a 1982 300D and it won't hold its self in 1st gear, but if the car isn't on a slope or on the level it will go and shift threw the rest of the gears fine. But on a slope it won't hold itself, it acts like its out of gear.....we flushed the trans and changed the filter. Didn't help.....does anyone know how to fix this??? thanks!

I don't think the car is supposed to hold itself on a steep slope. I have yet to drive an automatic that does that. BTW, it's "through" not "threw". That kind of threw me off.
