crush washer part #17?
Folks,
Several people have suggested replacing a crush washer or bushing in the IP going to the injection line to assist 603's in starting after sitting a while. Is that part #17 on the IP diagram a couple back? Is the part just aboved that ( #11? I forgot to write it down) an o-ring then ? Rafi, thanks for the great pictures. Chuck |

I prefer the Home Depot/Husky variety of 27mm or 1-1/16" deep socket. The Sears/Craftsman variety has an internal shoulder that can deform the return line nipples. The Home Depot/Husky sockets have a thinner wall just about all the way through. Maybe cheaper to make and doesn't last as long but works better for injectors.
Mapleleaf, I don't recall any plastic pieces when I replaced the head of the SDL. There was a prechamber and a locknut which I had the machine shop install. I installed the metal heat shield and the injector. Are you saying the collar is plastic? One shop guy looked through my parts and said I didn't provide them with some sort of crush washer. Another shop guy said that the 617s use a crush washer but the 603s don't. Parts catalogs concur. Sixto 95 S420 87 300SDL |

I just did the injectors yesterday and there was no plastic sleeve. Only the 350's must have had it.

Look below the intake manifold. There the little plugs that have wires comeing out off them. There is a large wire that starts by the spin on fuel filter (I think) that runs underneath the manifold. You should see a smaller wire comeing off of that for each off the 6 glowplugs. You have to pull the intake manifold to get to them.

Do you know if the pre chamber can have part of it come loose inside and have a rattle at idle ? I have a combustion leak on #4 of my 91 350 SDL, I have had the injectors rebuilt and balanced to within one bar and on #4 you can feel and hear a noise in the IP line and there is a combustion leak as well. I removed the injector, cleaned out the hole and threads, stayed with the fire ring that I replaced 6000 miles ago and torqued it high to 70 lb. ft. and it still puffs out air at idle and the plastic piece is melting around the edges ????

Do a search on Oldsouth's posts. If I remember correctly he was having a leak from one of his prechambers also. Their is a ring inside of them that seals, also they are not very expensive to replace.

Just make sure that the injectors are the correct parts. and spray the Glow plugs and injectors with WD 40 for a day or 2 to help them come out easier. Also remember to disconnect battery before as I have always blown the glow plug 80 amp fuse when messing around with them. The inlectors should look exactly the same as the ones coming out and are supposed to be matched as well to eachother.

wd-40?
WD -40 stuff really doesn’t do much of anything. You’re wasting time AND money.
With unlike metals such as aluminum and steel I have found that a product called " Kano Kroil Penetrating Oil" works great. This product penetrates very quickly. Check out Eastwood. My guys in the shop swear by it. Another good product that works is PB Power Blaster....You can find it at Pep Boys. It a 1950's looking white /yellow can with black and red letters. This stuff really works! -AC |

How is ALLDATA now? I know a few years ago, I bought a CD from them for my car and all that was in it were a few copied pages out of a service manual but mostly generic Ford info.

Not to be a pain but this thread is a year old! This job is long done and I have 12k miles on my work. So far everything seems fine.
I bought a W126 CD for $20. Same stuff as the books4cars paper manuals but about $500 cheaper! WD40 is crap but it will work well if you spray your lure. I don't even have a can in my garage. Get a good penitrating(sp?) oil not fish oil.
