I was bad today. What would you have done?

While driving to work today I was stopped at a light. At that intersection i had a clear view of a gas station. I could see a woman in a Ford Mustang stop at the Diesel pump.

Anyone could have guessed what she did. Part of me wanted to warn her. That meant having to back up and switch lanes in early morning traffic. The other part of me said, maybe Ford started putting diesel engines in mustangs and that the woman knew what she was doing.

The devilish side of me won. I watched as long as I could until the light changed. It would have been fun to see how far she got on diesel fuel.

I guess it would have been more interesting if she was a "He" (in a suit, wearing suspenders, talking on the cell, drinking a starbucks) and drove a big new BMW. If that was the case, I would not mind being late for work to see what happens when a BMW pretends to be a diesel.

I guess I should have stopped.......hmmmm..nah!

What would I have done?

Stared in disbelief, probably nothing. I have enough difficulty educating my wife and daughters.

Must a Friday the 13th thing for the mustang owner.

I would hope I could have found away to help. Putting myself in her shoes, if my mind was distracted and I was pumping gas into my diesel and someone pointed it out, I would be so very grateful.

Sometimes it has nothing to be with being dumb, sometimes life tosses us a shock that so overloads our mind we can't think.

Thanks for the post, it reminded me to help someone today!

Yeah, I would have tried to pull over to say something--might have honked the horn at her, gotten her attention and pointed at the pump. Would do the same if it were a guy in a big new Bimmer.

Gosh, I sure hope somebody would do the same for me if started to absent-mindedly pump gas into my 300SD.

Everything comes full circle.

Only problem, the gas tank inlets on newer models of gasoline engines are smaller diameter. You cannot put a Diesel pump nozzle into a newer (after 1979 or so--don't know exact year) gasoline tank. You can, however, put a gasoline nozzle into a Diesel tank.

What year model was that Mustang?

I had a guy that works at a Flying J come running up to me out of breath saying I was putting the wrong fuel in my benz one day. He must have run close to a 100 feet to warn me not to put diesel in my car. Guess he doesn't see too many diesel cars getting fuel there at the J. I was a little spooked by somebody running across the station at me, but I did thank him for his effort. Then I explained that diesel was really what I wanted to put in my car.

Not necessarily. I've stopped at many a diesel tank that had an unleaded sized nozzle on it. Some Ford diesels use the restricted filler hole.

I've had people warn me that I was putting Diesel in my car before...... my response is usually "thanks, I know, it's a Diesel".

OK. Never seen that. Do you mean that the diesel Fords can't go to a truck stop in Nowhere, NM and fuel up? All the diesel fuel pumps in the US will now have to switch to the smaller nozzles because one manufacturer makes a change that is not required by the state or federal agencies? I am having difficulty with this. Maybe there are stations with the smaller nozzles on the diesel pump, but more likely a mistake in putting the wrong nozzle on.

I think only the truck pumps or high speed diesel pumps have the larger nozzle. In my experience, they also usually have a green handle as opposed to a black handle. The diesel pumps made for cars have smaller nozzles than the diesel truck pumps. I always thought they were the same size as gas nozzles. Please correct me if I'm wrong though.

Stations that serve mostly large trucks sometimes have very large nozzles, this can be a pain, trickling fuel into a filler that the "pipe" won't fit into. Not too common, but it happens.

not to change the subject but my buddies and i were at a red light and watched a 26ish blond on a cell phone, in a suit hop in her Rangerover and drive off with the handle still in the car...it ripped the line right off of the pump and broke at the "saftey release" i am guessing...

that all happened too fast to stop her, but we all got a good laugh.

but to address the Q - i would have tried to stop the Mutang if i could have done something.... i get a lot of odd looks when i pull up to the Diesel pump in one of our mustangs, but im putting the fuel in a 6 gallon carry tank for the garage heater - also get alot of odd looks putting Diesel in the passat - but thats what it takes.
