any of you converted to using ''GREASE'' for fuel

I just got the new car and driver and it's got A great article on diesels and where their headed. Also another article about greasecar.com, pretty interesting I guess you just go around resturants or fast food places and get used fry oil I dont know how you process the fry oil though, do you have to have A mini refinery at your house mixing and filtering and what not, or do you just dump it in and drive? Either way sounds like A great idea, The fuel will always be plentful for as long as we have A large fat appatite for fried foods, and that shouldn't be A problem with our overweight fat a$$ nation fry on!!:D

I have never run used grease. I did use 3 gallons of fresh soybean oil in an empty tank as an experiment.

It ran well. Very quiet, little smoke, almost unnoticable loss of power, and smooth running. The exhaust smells exactly like burnt popcorn. :D

If diesel were to ever go over $2.75 per gallon, I would be happy to switch to storebought soybean oil. Until then, I'll just have to settle with standard petro-diesel. :(

You can do it, but you have to worry about keeping the grease (waste vegetable oil) warm, making sure it's filtered, and making sure it is of good quality. I don't know what grease will do to the life of the injection pump.

but if your out on the road how long does it take to ''fill up'' are you having to haggle with some cook in the back of kitchen in some two bit town, then set up A mini refinery on location to filter and process. please do tell

You can always switch back whenever, it'll still run off petro diesel.

I wouldn't EVER use cooking oil or grease as motor fuel. I wouldn't think about used engine oil, paint thinner, JP-4 or scented lamp oil as a motor fuel either.

I wouldn't think of it since it's illegal because there is no federal road tax collected on those substances.

I would however, consider using cooking oil, grease, used engine oil, paint thinner, JP-4 or scented lamp oil as a motor fuel additive.

Lots of SVO/biodiesel information here: http://biodiesel.infopop.cc/6/ubb.x?a=cfrm&s=447609751

It isn't an additive if you have run out of fuel trying to find out where your reserve light comes on and have to coast into a Supermarket parking lot.... then drive off after having only bought a gallon of Crisco Corn oil.... :D Sound familiar ?

It's easier to convert it to Biodiesel

I make and use biodiesel in my Direct injection truck. With all the hassle of heating and filtering it's just as easy to convert it and then you dont have to worry about all the other issues with used vegetable oil. One of the reasons I bought my 300SD is because it would still run so well with all of the crap people run through them.

Personally I dont plan on treating my car that way. I want it to last a long time. They run well on V-Oil but it's work to do it right...

There is also the issue of the "grease" being thicker, not atomizing properly upon injection, and causing buildups of goop on the injector nozzles, pistons (direct injection), and in the prechambers and on the glowplugs (indirect injection). It will run, it's just a matter of how long... which is yet to be determined in many cases. Food for thought. :)

My stuff is all additive. Even my additive has diesel in it.

grease is from animal fat and waste oil is oil that has been used to fry things. You will not be able to use bacon grease as a fuel. Diesels will burn just about anything, used motor oil, any kind of veggy oil etc. What if any harm it may cause in the long run, is always up to debate. I have dumped about 32 ounce of used fry oil from our granpappy fryer in the kitchen. I first filter it through cheese cloth and pour it in. I figure with all the petro diesel that is already in the tank, the veggy oil will get properly diluted for burning.

Oh Boy!

Where do I start?

I have nearly 50,000 miles on waste fryer oil (wvo) and have helped nearly a hundred folks convert diesel cars, trucks, tractors, gensets, and pumps.

The wvo must be prefiltered to 5 microns and dewatered to assure that it will not clog filters or damage injector pumps. This is relativly simple. I have a prefilter/dewaterer unit I built for $65 that sits in the 2'x2' corner of my unheated garage and supplys my 20 gallon per day needs. I also heat with the prefiltered wvo.

You cannot simply pull up to a grease dumpster and filter as you pump it into your tank...the filtering required is too fine to accomplish that fast. Filtering on the move is also not much of an option since no one has been able to do this ...though many have tried.

The "issue of the "grease" being thicker, not atomizing properly upon injection" is easily addressed by heating the wvo as it is used using coolant/vegoil heat exchangers and small aux. 12vdc inline heaters. I live in MN and the issue of solidified wvo in lines, tanks, and filters is also easily addressed with similar heat sources.

I also make biodiesel. IMO it is much easier to convert a vehicle to wvo than make biodiesel. And the cost difference is significant. $1.35 vs 8 cents per gallon. It is a no brainer for me.

It is not illegal to use wvo as fuel. A federal "road tax" exemption exists for up to 1,200 gallons of on road use fuel per year. Most states either choose to not enforce the "road tax" on wvo fuel or are more than willing to accept a per year esitmate of the amount of wvo fuel you use along with your check. Mine has given me an exemption for up t the 1,200 federal exemption level.

I spend less time on tending my "processing unit" than I do pumping my tank ful of nearly free fuel.

And the cost of converting my vehicle AND the fuel processor was less than $250.:D
