Odometer/trip meter
Aargh!
My '77 240D has an odometer quirk. If the trip meter doesn't work, the odometer won't work either. The trip meter will occasionally work, but always stops when the 'tenths' # is on 9. During all of this, the speedometer works accurately. I replaced the speedometer cable a few years ago, but this problem didn't begin until months later. Anyone ever have a similar quandry? Any suggestions appreciated. -Elizabeth.

This is a very common problem and I've solved it in two different ways:
1. Remove the instrument cluster (plenty of advice here) and destroy the gear which connects the trip meter to the odometer. This will give you a functioning odometer but no more use of the trip meter. 2. Replace with a used cluster and put a drill on the odometer to adjust the miles to match the old one. You want the miles to be accurate. In addition, us diesels fans are proud of our miles! I've also heard that you can order them with miles preset. If you do a search, you'll find some more facts on these options. Don
