possible fire situation

I flushed the brakes on the 81 SD I got last week.Car had soft pedal.

was getting no fluid to flow from right rear with mighty vac then reilized that the front chamber of the brake resivor was emtpy (hard to see as was dirty) filled it and found leaking front gromet between resivor and master cylinder I changed that 2 dollar part and prceeded.

I finished flushing all wheels and took it for test drive. smoke started coming from under hood.I opened the hood and found that brake fluid from the leaking gromet had soaked the coils of the heater motor reostat and was smoking a bunch. There were also some soaked leaves there . I got my leaf blower and blew out the leaves. could have been a bad situation.

Probably why I got such a nice car at such a good price. the fellow I bought it from only owened it a month and was scared off by soft brakes and smoke.........

Yes I ended up putting a new master cylinder on it as brakes were still soft. If you park under trees the 126 super hood leaf scopper will do the job........

A month can be a long time, if you consider the life expectancy of a butterfly.

William,

It sounds like you have the Binford leaf scopper 9000!

I'm glad that you managed to get the situation under control and the car fixed.

Enjoy,

Yet another reason to carry a small fire extinguisher. The smallest fire can burn your car to the ground if you don't have any way to put it out...... glad that didn't happen.
