Are you a diesel nerd?
Complete as needed.
|
Need another choice.
My answer is:
:D No, but I hope to be one when I grow up! :D |
So what haven't the engineers dreamed of? Somebody says they know...
|
Well I suppose I could have marked the engineer one but didn't. The engineers or at least their bosses probably didn't know how long they'd actually last otherwise they would have been fired for making a car that lasted so long! No money in parts, sell some more NEW cars!! ;)

A Diesel nerd? HE** YEAH!
|
Around these parts i'm already known as the Safety Geek. Adding diesel nerd to the equation may be more than I could stand!:D :D ;)
|
With me it even worse.
I am a diesel/vegoil nerd:(
My spouse says that makes me very "special"..like "short bus" special. Since you can only convert diesel engined vehicles to (free) vegoil fuel she has finally resigned herself to never owning a gasoline powered vehicle again. This process was "relationship threatening" until she realized I planned on providing her and the kids with Benz diesels. :D There was a lot less resistance after that. ;) Daughter still resists.. she LOVES her SAAB. Of course as fuel prices go up...and she has to begin paying for her own (very expensive) repairs she may realize that a poor college student cannot afford a Swedish car even if Benzes are "stodgy"...her words not mine. And when I let her drive my 190 2.5DT she "complained" that it was more fun to drive than her 9000 Aero. :D DUH! Resitance is futile. Geez..gotta change my signature...outdated. |
My wife definitely thinks I am
:)
I'm in Dana's camp. I still own some gasoline-powered cars, but one day everything I own will be powered by veggie. I'm in the process of switching out engines in my 83 300D. I really don't think there was anything wrong with the engine that's in it now, but I got a donor car with only 125,000 miles on it and the tranny and engine in it are in perfect condition, so I just could not resist switching out engines and tranny. The tranny in my 83 300D is suspect. I'm definitely sold on the Mercedes diesels. It's only been a 1 1/2 years since I found out how special diesel engines were. My wife tells me when I jump into something that I definitely jump into with both feet.:) Dana, I see the 300 is next on your list. I should be starting my conversion in the latter part of March. Hope to have it finished for summer vacation. |
Compared to most here, I don't think I am, but all my friends do.

My wife thinks I am
My wife thinks I am.
Without a doubt. I know things about diesels that even their engineers didn't dream of. I can't tell you, it's all secret. :D Have a great day. . |
the wife thinks the diesel is 'too slow'
if she only knew the nickname for her vw is 2.slow !:p |
Here's a follow-up question...what percentage of your driving time have you been using a diesel as a daily driver?
For instance, I've been driving for 6 years, and have owned a diesel for 5 of those years, so I've been running exclusively on oilburners for 83% of my driving life. And I AIN'T GOIN' BACK!! :p :D :p |
Quote:
counting my job: 98% for 2 years. I have never owned a non-Diesel car, and I never will!!! |
My parents thought I was insane for not only buying a Mercedes, an "old" car, one I've never seen before 900miles away, with 263k miles on it, and then on top of that a DIESEL!! My dad probably got to sleep on the couch the night I spent driving it home, he wasn't happy about it but didn't stop me where as my mom was less than enthusiastic about it. ;) The day I brought it home they were saying how nice it looked and what a good deal I got....
Anyway back to the question, since I've bought them I've drove them 98% of the time in good weather and the other 2% I drive the talon in either horrible weather or great weather. :) But for the last three or four weeks I've been driving the gasser, ever since the MB gave me problems starting (I think something is wrong with the GPs, battery was bad too). The future holds a CTD (Cummins Turbo Diesel) for me! I want something bigger, stronger, and faster. :) |
tough call
I know SOME engine designations (616, 617, 603), but I'm still fuzzy on the differnece between a 617.950, .951 and .952. Also fuzzy on OM-motors after the 603. 602 ? what do they call the latest CDI motor ? (601?). What OilMotor is in the 190-series (the W201 chassis =)
Yeah...MB numbers..gotta love it =) -John |
