114/115 steering box..... will it fit the 123??
Just had the suspension peaked and tweaked with expert wheel allignment..... ball joints and tie-rods are good - but steering box is crap. I would rather scavenge junkyard 114/115 box instead of going with another w123 crummy box, even new off the shelf.
Does anybody know if the 114/115 steering box lines up with steering shaft and matches wheel well mounts of the w123??

I believe you are SOL, the W115 is I think quite different.
Why would you prefer the 115 box over the 123 box? I started to go out and look at my W115, I only have three W123 to do a side-by-side comparison, but I suddenly realized my W115 has manual steering :p (as in no power! - I love the way that one steers, just like days of old!) I suggest you either find a used but fairly low mileage steering box, or have yours rebuilt. I have done both. I was lucky to find a 150K used box. It is tighter than the $300 rebuild I had done last December! FWIW, a good used box is hard to find these days but they are around. I saw a 300d non turbo at a wrecker in San Jose the speedometer showed 46K on it! That would be the steering box to get (provided you believe the readout)! Manual steerage is fine by me..... yet later 114/115s had power steering as well. Right now the Bowling Green boneyard has two 116's whose steering gear I'm also thinkin about.
Doing a side-by-side comparison with string for measurement - does it appear to you the distance between shaft splines is close enough..... and how do the mounting bolts compare, hopefully identical. Am exploring this possibility because i consider the w123 steer gear box to be the worst feature on the car...... have never seen any w123 that didnt have soft and mushy steering.

You are welcome to drive my '79. It is stiff and responsive. You would then not be able to say that.
OTOH, I would not allow you to critique my'85 300TD, even with its rebuilt box its mushy. Its an embarassment to me because I want it tight as the '79, even though is has lower miles. I have yet to sort out the reason for this but will keep you posted. DDH

You can put a box from a 107, 116, or a 126 into a 123 car, but not a 114/115.

w107 4th, 5th version= w114/115 2nd, 3rd, 4th version=w123 1st version= w116 1st version no. 765.701 looks like they will work. don

Now that I remember, I believe my '83 300D has a W116 steering box in it. It has a '85 300TD differential I know for certain. For a short time it had a steering wheel out of a W126 that was not the right seat, it used the same spline but instead of a cone seat it had a flat seat for a big nut to hold it down. It looked odd too as I recall.
Anyhow find a tight steering box off a low mileage car (not a W115) and you will be a lucky man! Changing this is a PITA as far as I am concerned. DDH

i would think that the 114/115 would be your best bet.
steering box would probably be in better shape because: these cars are lighter than the 116/123s. they dont roll into curves like the 116/123s which would add stress to the steering mechinisms . they were slower. 107s are rarer with v8s that broke the subframes and who knows what else. all in all less stress to the box. in my opinion the 115s take curves and straiteaways better than the 123s don Last edited by notlostmaybe; 02-21-2004 at 02:45 PM.
