As Dieseldiehard observed, your car has the considerably faster 6 cylinder OM603 engine that is much more powerfull than the earlier 5 cylinder OM617 engines. It may take a second or two for the turbo to spool up from rest but after that it should really start to fly. You can tell if you still have a trap oxydizer if you see a canister about the size of a number 10 coffee can with tapered ends just behind the turbo. If you do, take the car to your nearest dealer and respectfully request (demand) that you get the free retrofit to a trap catalyst. The retrofit on the OM603 looks pretty much like a normal exhaust tube with some aluminum heat shield wrapping on it. The dealer should check out your turbo at the same time for damage. If the turbo is bad due to an old oxydizer, that will be replaced for free too. You are correct that your engine doesn't need the valves adjusted. Also, the fact you have strong performance at speed suggests that the vacuum system (known as the ALDA) that adjusts the fueling is OK too. Next time you are out, test to see if your transmission is upshifting too soon. With your foot to the floor from a dead stop the car should hold 1st and 2nd gear at least until you see 3,500 RPM. If not suspect a tranny adjustment (either Bowdoin cable or vacuum) is in order. Finally, if the trap is updated, the tranny shifting properl and the car is still slow after having driven it a bit then you should definitely check the turbo. Trap oxidixer...It should be apparently obvious from the picture and previous postings. Oxy-Clean solution! A catalyst is fitted to the exhaust, and the trap oxidizer is replaced with a straight pipe and heat shield. |

I borrowed a nice digital camera in order to take some pics for gsxr, who asked me to record the progress as my OM603 is being rebuilt, but batteries are NiMh and are dead, and I do not have the correct charger for it, so I was unable to get photos for you I have also been working on my lil 220, the clutch has seemingly locked up and is giving me fits (a post will be made on the vintage thread, I might need to consult with the diesel experts here, even though the car is a gasser, I am at my wits end and need HelPPP!) Anyhow, the best advise is to look at DslBnz pictures, if your engine has that pregnant football looking thing in line, go at once to a MB dealer and find the service manager and be kind to him, he will be your best solution. If your exhaust system is still a virgin then I am certain that is why it is so sluggish, the trap doesn't allow the turbo to spool up when it gets plugged up with carbon, even though the engine will perform Ok after a bit when it finally winds up in RPM, this is exactly the symptom of a plugged trap. The only 86 SDLs with the Trap Oxidizer were sold in the Replublic of Kalifornia (native Calif. who moved away and never looked back). So chances are moxwell's doesn't have one. When I adjusted the ALDA on my OM617, it made a huge difference in take off power. I turned it up until I got black smoke then turned it down about a quarter turn. When it was running lean, it didn't seem to effect the top end much only the bottom. My SDL (OM603) was adjusted for too much fuel and smoked black a lot. Turning it down cleared it up but at first I turned it down too much and it seem to most effect take off speed. The SDL is much quicker than the SD but both when properly adjusted are ok off the line. Niether will out perform a Vet (or even my truck with the 6.5L Turbodiesel V8). My suggestion would be to remove the trap if it has one (not likely) and then check the boost line to the ALDA. Please note that this is a pressure line, not a vacuum.

thanks again to all the great posts, my car does have the new retrofit sans oxidizer, i kinda was hoping it was there so as to get a new turbo, I reconnected a broken line that appears as it is a BIC pen ink tube, it ran from the intake manifold to the firewall and then back to the ALDA, it ran much better, the gears however are not so smooth when it shifts and second gear sesms to "slam" a little into the next shift, but over all I am really happy with the car, I got it for $3500.00 with about 217,000 miles. I do not know what it is about diesels, but i just really love to drive them, I hope to one day be able to repay everone who was kind enough to offer their help, I am not very mechanically knowledgeable, not yet at least, but I am not afraid to get in their and get my hands dirty. thanks again.
