Ball Joint Squeaks?
I believe that my front right ball joint is toast. I cannot tell anything from a performance perspective, but it squeaks pretty bad at times. Does not seem to be the springs, and no squeaks from other wheel wells. Any experience here? How much should it cost to replace? I've heard 4.5 hours. Also, how urgently do I need to address it? Someone told me I might as well do the whole front end. True or baloney? Thanks.

You will usually get clunks and clicks from bad ball joints but I never got squeeks. I did get squeeks from my bad lower control arm bushings. Best bet is to jack it up and shake and move everything up down and sideways. You'll surely find the play and what components are bad.

I had a different experience from 'billrok'.
Mine squeeked like crazy and in both instances (separate cars), it was the lower ball joint. 1. see if the rubber boot is cracked 2. squirt something in there to see if you can manipulate and lesson the squeek (for diagnosis purposes) 3. replace it in time. I learned that those things are tougher than nails and probably (in my case) wouldn't have failed (in terms of snapping off), but the squeek was annoying. Don

I think I have the same problem on the W124 (190k on the clock). I heard a clunk from the front on a couple of really hard right-hand corners recently.
Yesterday while getting prepped for a trip to a beach-house it started howling when turning the wheel. Lubed the bushings to no effect. When you drive and turn it would seem a core suspensio component has run out of greese (lower ball seems most likely). Anyone know of a tutorial on W124 lower ball joint replacement? All I could find was one for the W126 and that's obviously a lot different. THX! - David (I knew I should not have eBayed my W124 manuals when we sold our orther car 3 years ago)

I had both mine repaced for $740 and 5 hours work at the local garage. Nobody would even atempt an alignment until they were replaced.
