Diesel drivers should always theses spare items:

1. Glow plug relay fuses.

I was supposed to go to Port St Lucie yesterday and the glow plug light didn't come. It wouldn't start and I didn't want to experiment since I had my Dad's 240 to use.

Came back last night, changed it out and off I went.

2. Always have some veggie oil in the trunk in case you run out.

Almost ran out on my trip and was secure knowing that I had 2.5 gallons of corn oil in trunk. I was sort of hoping I did so my frined could freak out with my use of corn oil.

Anymore "must haves?"

A way to get the veg oil into the tank (a funnel) is a good idea.

Agreed!

Although you could always rig one in an emergency.

must haves

Emergency items I have in my trunk:

V-belts - not generally stocked in No-where-ville, Idaho

Starter Fluid - had to use it twice already when the temp dropped unexpectedly

Big Knife - well used, has been an essential tool in many on-the-go fixits

Duct Tape - the handymans secret weapon (or the engineers secret ninja trick)

Screwdriver - 1,000 uses and counting

Assorted nuts, bolts, clips, lines, tubes, nicknacks from previous repairs and replacements...who knows what you'll need in a pinch.

My complete metric tool box, including all of the above and much more. Plus mechanical and disel knowledge acquired through the years, including helping to start my Dad's cummins diesels in INT'L and Diamond-Reos in the mid to late 60's in sub-10 degree F. temps. at 2:00 a.m. (before I got up to start milking the cows and thawing out the water lines to the house.... (this was in N. Texas, before we knew about global warming)

Kamil,

Do a search on veggie oil/bio diesel and you'll find tons on info.

Diesel engines were originally designed to run on vegetable oil.

Go to veggievan.org and see.

FWIW

There's already been one thread (What is in your trunk? (survey)) about what to carry as spares and, yes, you can use corn oil in the tank of your diesel.

There was a thread or two about that as well...
Corn Squeezins
What can't we burn in our diesels ???
Soybean oil in my SDL..............
any of you converted to using ''GREASE'' for fuel
Diesel runs on vegetable oil???

ad nausaeum...

A spare fuel filter seems to be something everyone should carry with them as well.

Sounds to me like it's time for either an oil thread or a timing chain stretch thread.

Lightbulb

It will soon be air conditioning season. We can have another refrigerant war!

Or how about green vs. orange coolant?

Or how about the crappy quality of newer Mercedes cars?

"Oh boy, is that the chocolate bar?"

10 points to anyone who can give the source of that.

I'm sure some guys have grown tired of certain questions as they have been posted several times, in different forms.

When you stop to think about it, there really aren't any NEW developments in these cars as they have been around so long.

If we all stopped posting just because it's already been asked/answered there would be very few new posts.

I like to post things as they apply to my current situation.

Next time, oil thread.
