Damned shame.

Better rocks that car body parts, though -- lost the windsheild on the TE three years ago to flying parts from an accident on the other side of a two lane.

I don't know the law in your state, but in MD, the truckers paid somebody....
If a rock, or any other debris falls off a truck, ( and you see it) and it hits the road, and then bounces up and breaks your windshield, it is NOT the truckers fault! Once it hits the road, it is road debris. Apparently, the only way for a truck to be responsible is if you are tailgating him so that the rock falls off the truck and onto your car before it hits the road.
A good politician is one who stays bought!

I think (notice that I didn't say that I know) that their responsibility with their trucks are to keep them clean such that they don't keep throwing rocks. I've never yet seen a gravel truck pulled over for that. Another responsibility is making sure there are functional mud flaps on the trailer. I was going up a huge hill which semis always bog down on, following a car which was following a garbage truck. It was great weather and I had my window open. Out of the blue what do I see? A rock hurled up, over the vehicle in front of me, hits my door, bounces off my dash, and misses my eye by 1"!! Yes it has a nice turbo in it, once the path is clear.

Heh, want to see something funny/absurd? Factory original windshield. It has about 7 chips in it (all from p/o), you can see where I started filling them so they wouldn't travel. Maybe one day when I change routes I'll buy a new windshield.

My talon had not a single rock chip in the windshield and practically none on the car, in a month or two of normal driving some vehicle ruined the windsheild (I still don't know what did it, nothing was within 100ft of me! ). I bought a bra for it figuring that'd stop the rock chips, right?! WRONG. They are still making it through the bra! @#$^$%^$$#%^#$%@#$@$ gravel trucks....

In California it is state law that open trucks carrying gravel or dirt have to have full tarps covering the top of the truck. I have been told that the CHP enforce it pretty tightly and from my experience I almost never see a gravel truck that isn't pretty well sealed up. Not all our laws are wacky.

Cracked windshield

Mine has been cracked for the whole 7 months I've owned it. It was about 20" long when I bought it and has grown past halfway, 7 inches of it is from the wind blowing my hood back while I was working on the engine.

Most people I've talked to said to not worry about it unless it leaks, moves, or get sick of seeing it.

The only time that the tarp on the top of the bed does anything is for sand, for any other material it doesn't do anything. I've forgot to cover loads up like this once or twice before even with sand and I couldn't notice the difference. I always try to wipe down the outside of the bed before taking off. Stones can/will pile up on the side of the truck from the loader, again the drivers are required to do this.

Doesn't the hood stop once vertical?

If it leaks I'd really be worried about the safety of it, otherwise it probably isn't that big of a deal. It is a weak spot if something does hit the windshield, but I wouldn't lose sleep over it.

Even though it didn't get rid of all or any of them I went around and filled all of mine with a clear epoxy meant for the job, the epoxy is stronger than the "glass" itself. It made a noticeable difference in all of the chips I worked on, but none just disappeared. I've done this to about a dozen rock chips so far only two or three have vanished, the rest were a vast improvement though.

i had put one in at the start of last summer with new seals front and at back glass...

it is PPG glass, not OEM, and with the sun visor tint(not as nasty as i thought it was going to be), you can get it without...it was ~$180, ~$50 for the OEM seal.

We used to live down the road from a gravel pit. All our cars had chips and cracks in the windshield. When they get bad enough, you file a cliam and get it replaced. Most auto glass companies here will re-imburse the deductable up top $50 or $100.

It is law in Michigan also to cover up the trailer.

I doubt I'd do it for the windshield but I should get some of that plastic stuff for my headlights so the plastic catches the rocks and not my lenses! Really I should put that similiar stuff on the painted surface below the headlights, at least that should take out most of the damageable surfaces.

I live 5 miles from one and drive past several others, the biggest problem is when it is nasty out and the trucks have crud all along the underside of their frame. When they hit one of our many earth creters in the road (hint, I live in the state with quite possibly the worst roads in the country!) it jars the stuff loose for traffic to catch.

Insurance repairs

Here in Oregon they use gravel on teh roads in the winter and I go through a windshield about every three years or so. We have the glass installers that will give you a discount up to 100.00 of your deductible but that is assuming you have comprehensive on your old benz.
I don't on any of mine becuase it adds about 250 a year to the costs and frankly the only thing that it would be good for is the windshield because if I get a good ding in a parking lot the car is totalled based on the value that I paid for them. In totalling they only give you 70% of the value.
Bummer really but that is the way it works...
