did mercedes ever do TV ads for diesels?
just wondering cause I just saw A commerical on tv for the brand new dodge and no it wasn't for the hemi or v10 v8 gas gulzers 1500 ,no it was for the 2500 diesel powered cummins I couldn't belive it. They even gave the torque rating which the IND never does just the hp,pretty cool, ive never seen A diesel commerical. So do you think mercedes did them back in the day. BTW the dodge commerical was shown in CA

I'm not old enough to remember that, my MB was made when I was 2yrs old.
As for the CTD commercials, well I read a stat that the Dodge Ram 2500 sold about 75% of the motors with the CTD the other 25% were either the Hemi or that other huge gas guzzler.

As I remember the Mercedes adds back then sold the cars on a basis of safety and longevity and don't mention the engines much other than the fact that they would run for hundreds of thousands of miles. Given the quality of cars coming from Detroit at the time it was an obvious selling point. The diesels were then, like now, mostly a curiosity to the average car buyer so I think the ads sold the car and then the buyers got sold on the engine in the showroom.

I don't know if MB made any diesel ads. Dodge airs the "Cummins 600" ad quite often here in Oklahoma.I very much doubt it would be anywhere near as quiet as they claim in the ad, although the difference between an '01 24-valve and '03 common rail is very astounding. (I still think pilot injection is just a waste of fuel/energy.)

I do remember that M-B did advertize their diesels back in the late 70's and I think they were touting that their diesels were capable of reaching the 1,000,000 mile mark. I think they even showed a million mile MB diesel in the TV ad.
I also remember at about the same time Audi was advertizing their new 5 cylinder gas engine. I remember they had someone from Audi with a German accent saying, "Four cylinders was not enough and six cylinders was too much. Five cylinders is just right". Anyone else old enough remember that commercial?

Jeff, I guess that means we're about the same age. I was 4 when my car was built and 2 when my truck was built (August '83).
FWIW, I would estimate that a common-rail Cummins is about as loud on the inside as a 123. Now, by car standards, that may seem pathetic...but compared to other diesel pickup trucks around, that's pretty bloody quiet. My 123's the first diesel I've owned (the first car diesel; every other one was in a truck) that I can have a conversation in on the freeway without getting hoarse. I saw that Dodge commercial recently, and broke up laughing when the guy pulled the Ford out of the way. I want a 6BT Cummins in my truck... *sighs wistfully*

The new Cummins is just a tick quieter than my 03 Duramax, at least from the outside. The duramax is a little louder than my 87 SDL from the outside, but at 75 mph the interior noise is pretty close to the same. The biggest difference is I can hear the turbo whine much better in the truck since the turbo is just on the other side of the fire wall (I consider this to be a good thing, some may not).

ABSOLUTELY they did! In the late seventies, early eighties as high as 80% of the MB's sold in the US were diesel, so they HAD to advertise.
There were some REALLY COOL commercials too. There was one where they loaded a million mile 240D into an airplane to take back to Germany for analysis. That car was later featured in a edition of the Star magazine in about '96 and from that article, I don't think that the car ever actually went back to Germany. There was another add that showed the research car that was used for lots of engine development testing for the the 617. That car sits in the Museum in Stuttgart now and I would strongly recommend seeing it if you ever have a chance to go to Stuttgart. There were numerous other commercials that showed such things as the 116 on the high banking of the test track etc. These commercials were routinely aired on NFL football games in the late seventies, early eighties. Have a great day, |

I remember the one where they had the million mile 240D driving across the desert. I don't really remember when that was but I'm guessing mid 80's. I think the car was brown.......

Yup same year, 9 months difference.
I read a review on the new 2k3 2500 Rams. They said that the CTD was quieter on the inside than the Hemi motor was! I've also heard from a CTD owner (Lightman) that his truck was a little quieter than a duramax. How great would that be, a cummins in a ford.

This might be considered a diesel commercial if you count the 300SD, SDL, and 350SD and SDL, but I remember seeing a commercial when I was little (the early 90's) with a yellow W126 racing down a test track with crash test dummies inside, exhibiting the safety of the S-class.

Remember million-mile ad, and crash-test ad...but
think great bulk of Mercedes advertising has always been in upscale print venues, rather than the "mass" broadcast media. Have quite a bit of dealer material and magazine ads for my early '80s diesels, plus the odd piece from earlier models.

you cant turn on a tv here in texas without seeing a diesel pickup truck commercial. VW did some diesel commercials a year or two back as well. diesel engines are a little more restricted in CA, so i wouldnt expect you to have many ads.

Yes watching the CTDs on ebay it seems like 4 in 5 are in texas so they are pretty hot there and not so hot elsewheres I guess. I still see quite a few on the roads here but judging by the sales on eBay they must be just every other vehicle down there.
