Nasty burned rubber smell from under car

The past two days, I have been noticing a burned rubber smell coming from under the car. It is not from the engine compartment and therefore, I'm guessing it is the flex disk. Anyone had this before?

In any case, not driving car until I can get it up and look.

Appreciate comments,

Mike

I would also worry about the flexdisc, but it also might be the center support that has come apart and the bearing is spinning in the rubber?

Might actually be the alternator belts

When I went to move the 300TD tonite the battery was down. So I charged it for a little bit and it started right up. Looking at the belts they were obviously loose. I was getting 16.9v at idle but I wonder if they wern't just slipping at speed and also burning since they were slipping. Anyway, I'll be able to get it up in the air Saturday and hopefully, it will make it one more day until I can get under it and have a good look.

Sixteen point nine?!! That is way too high. What you smell is your electrical system melting.

Yes, sounds like the volt reg in the alt is in Mexico.

Maybe swap in an alt from junkyard or another car just to see.

if the alternator belt was slipping would you not get less voltage output?
wow over 16 volts

some other members have experienced this overvoltage situation lately i recall.
check on fastlane above.you should be able to just replace the voltage regulator rather than the whole alternator.

Alt at junkyard is cheaper than a volt reg. But..., there's a link somewhere that someone replaced the volt reg with a fender mounted Ford or Chevy? Been planning on doing just that.
