blows off the oil cap every few days!

Hello Everyone
I stopped for fuel.
Heard an old Ford diesel box truck, extended cranking, no start.
Walked over and talked with the driver.
He opened the hood, too much smoke and oil under hood and no oil filler cap.
"oh ya, it blows off every couple days, why would that matter?"
I suggested he have it towed to a shop, when he asked why, I had him hold his hand over the oil fill hole and cranked it over.
LOL. I could not help cracking up; the engine spit up so much oil that it showered him. LOL
"I guess there is sumthin wrong with the oil huh?"
I had the fellow call his supervisor, I told the boss that the engine was shot and would need a tow, the boss thanked me and I got coffee, the company tow arrived before I left, the tow driver came running over to ask a couple of questions.
He broke up when I told of the oil shower.
The tow driver assured me that the mechanics would get the whole story.

Hmmm, do you think the diesel truck driver should be moved to a less challenging position, waste management perhaps?
And I quote:
"I guess there is sumthin wrong with the oil huh?"
This mental giant is on the road in an old Ford diesel box truck.

Wow, what an experience that was!

It was a FORD!

Clogged oil passages?

Sounds like the guy has alot more to worry about than bad oil. ;)

Blow by and plugged vents.

Hello Everyone
Blow by and plugged vents.
The driver admitted to adding five quarts each morning.
The fellow thought that was normal for a diesel truck with a daily 68 mile route.

Now where else would you rather see such an individual employed?

1) Used car dealer?
2) Mechanic at Jiffy Lube?
3) Level 1 help at Compuserve tech support?

He could be gainfully employed at any of the above. Be thankful that he simply pushes metal down the road.

I'm sorry, but I see no humor in this story. The poor truck driver was doing the best he could do. Some people are born extremely intelligent, some are born average, and some are developmently disabled. As I see it the driver was doing the best he could and was a fellow citizen I would welcome as my next door neighbor. I cast no shadow on any person who does the best he can.

Reminds me of Uncle John. I used to work for a mechanic whose Uncle John, a farmer, brought us his truck for repairs. He was in his 70s and he mostly drove around in a Dodge Power Wagon 4 wheel drive pickup with a steel camper shell on the back, dickering in cattle. This guy was the hardest man on equipment I have ever seen.

One day he came in complaining of high oil consumption. No wonder - the oil was running out the hole where the rod went through the block. He had been driving like this for several days and didn't notice anything wrong except that he needed to add oil every day.

This guy could pulverise a Ford in one year, a Chev in 2 or 3. The Dodge lasted him 10 years. Once we put in a new engine.

Sorry if it offended you Peter.

The fellow was not developmentally disabled, just lazy, indifferent and in a Teamsters union job.

I would not make light of the situation otherwise.
Have a great day.

You need a cape!

I read two posts and in both you were coming to the rescue (sorta for the oil covered dude) of diesel drivers whose vehicles would not start. Maybe we should sew you up an oily spandex suit with a big SD on it! You could be the SuperDiesel everyone is talking about!

The "SuperDiesel" that drives a "super diesel". I love it. :D

I guess I see it another way. Somebody told the driver to add oil. Didn't tell him why. Didn't tell him what else to look for. When was the last time the truck was in the shop for a lookover? You're just seeing the effect of either a "slum lord" business owner or very poor union/management relations. If a slum lord then he won't be in business for long. If a bad union then shame on them.

Hunter,
Thanks for the update on the driver.

Phal,
I'll take the spandex suit, and don't forget the cape.
