Recently while looking for a wagon, I had a pre-purchase inspection done on a '95 E-320 wagon with under a hundred thousand miles on the clock. The car looked great and drove really great. Had a few minor issues that weren't really all that worrisome. Seeping head gasket, inop headrest, etc. Really liked the car and would have probably bought it, but on returning it to the dealer (used car type) I looked it over again and found the paint bubbling up at the lower edge of one of the rear windows. RATS! Almost anything other than rust. Got some excellent advice from the members here on the Forums. Steve Brotherton likened the rust I COULD see to the tip of an iceberg, i.e. if I could see a little, then there must be quite a lot I couldn't see. So, I had to pass on the car. I had looked at some others of the same vintage, all had some equipment that was not working or was missing. I guess when looking at cars that are nearly ten years old, one should not expect too much.
