'80 300D odometer and instrument backlight Q's
Not the most significant PITA, but nagging at me lately... my dash is dark, so are the lights on the ACC console. Bummer, huh? Even more frustrating is that they came on for a little while, out of the blue, gave me a taste of nighttime comfort (heat, speed, fuel... nice tidbits of info, n'est pas?), then crapped out again. When I had the cluster out recently, I made certain everything was connected... still no joy. What do the ACC lighting and the instrument backlights have in common? (The glow, highbeam and charging system lights all work, btw.) Do any of y'all have any advice for me?
Second, the trip-odo stalls occasionally, and works again after I reset it... for a while anyway. Last time it was 60 miles. Is there a reasonable fix for this? How hairy is rebuilding the odo? Thanks in advance!! Ash

Could be the dash light dimmer rheostat. Short out the 2 wires to it and all should be bright.

Driad,
A gear in the odometer is probably slipping on the shaft it turns or visa versa. A little epoxy or mircle glue should fix it. You shouldn't have to overhaul the whole odometer. I also agree that the dash light problem is probably caused by the dimming rheostat. If you don't mind the lights being non adjustable, soldering a wire across the rheostat terminals will fix the problem. P E H |

Superglue on the wheel is a good idea... I'll investigate when I have it out for the rheostat work.
I hope this doesn't sound dim (har har) but where's the rheostat? What knob it is connected to? Maybe I just dimmed it to black. (crossing fingers) Thanks! Ash

Driad,
There are 2 knobs near the speedometer you can turn. One is the odometer reset, the other is connected to the light dimmer (rheostat). On some models, you push the knob to reset the odometer. P E H |

The left knob on the cluster resets the trip mileage AND is the dimmer rheostat. Before you pull the cluster again, turn the knob on the left side of the cluster fully clockwise (I think) and make sure that you haven't inadvertantly dialed the lights down low.
