How to remove cables from heater valve?

I am replacing the heater valve in my '82 240D. I cannot remove the cable loop from the arms on the heater valve. Is there a trick to do this w/o destroying the lever arms?

Ewww. That's hard to do...and, the stupid FSM is no help either. All it says to do is "Disconnect bowden wire from water valve."

Yeah, right.

I used the jaws of a pair of diagonal cutters to carefully slide the coiled end of the bowden cable off of the ones I have. Sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn't.

OTOH, if you're replacing the valve, doesn't it come with new arms? If so, just clip the the nub off of the arm and push it out of the coiled end.

Good luck!

lever arm - are you referencing the cable with the coil on it from the hand hvac control?

if so what i did to remove that little bugger (it is a tuff one) was clip and unclip, working with a pair of hemostats to "unwind" the spring end and gently push off the coil...

granted mine was not broke and i was removing it to paint the engine bay so i was standing were the tranny bell housing should be...but thats what i did

Well, thanks for the replies.
As for clipping the arms and then removing the cables, I did that last time, ( about 2 months ago) when I installed a new vavle. Last week I noticed that I could not shut off the heat and saw that the arms of the new valve were broken, one was missing completely. I picked up another valve from the junkyard, and clipped the wires to remove that one from the donor vehicle. Now I have to carefully remove those wire ends from the arms w/o damage so I can install the cables from the dash control.
I just love it when the FSM says simply "remove".
Any more advice would be appreciated; is there a tool for this, or a secret, or just persistance?

When I did mine I just gripped the coil with a needle nose pliers and counter rotated it, like BF_JC230. It opens up and you can then slide it off. You do have to fool with it, meaning it doesn't just come right off, but it is not difficult. Check out my previous thread.
