315K miler 240D update...
Well, the car is running like a champ...I just adjusted the valves today, no major tweeks needed, all of them were close to within spec. I also checked the timing chain stretch, 1 degree tops! The chain was replaced at 210K miles.
My question...I am not sure I can explain this. When I removed the air filter compartment, I noticed that there was a ball join un-attached. The ball joint rod, on one end, connects to the throttle linkage and on the other end connects to a flap inside the air filter housing. When the throttle is pressed, the flap opens. 1) What in the heck is this? 2) Should it be attached? I know question #2 is a bit odd, but the previous owner (only owner) of this car was as meticulous as the day is long. Every record for every maintenance and every drop of fluid added to the car is documented. For this NOT to be attached is odd. So, I am thinking he did not attach this for a reason. Any thoughts?

I have the same car and I would reconnect it .
While your there I would try and see , maybe it popped off . and it needs to be replaced or cleaned up. Good luck.

After cleaning it lube is in order.. I think that normal ' white grease' would be fine... but just for the record the MB manual specifies " only ATF fluid"....

Thanks....
I reconnected it...I still do not know what this is called or what it does. If there is a name for this assmebly with the air flap, can you let me know. I will research from there.
Leatherman, your advice is great, but I not sure what you are referring to "but just for the record the MB manual specifies " only ATF fluid".... Anthony

The manual says only use automatic transmission fluid to lubricate those ball joints.

That complex mechanism somehow controls what gets passed through the EGR valve, I believe. My '82 240 had one of those but somehow it magically morphed into the '81 and earlier version sans EGR valve. I must have pulled a cupful of nasty black slime out of the intake ports on the head when I changed manifolds. Now it runs perfectly clean.
