Oil Pump Chain Broken
Recently purchased a 80 300sd parts/project car. Not sure as to what I was going to do with it when I bought it.
Found out the oil pump chain had broke and was spit out the side of the upper pan. Car has 316K on the odometer, but appears to have been cared for up to a point. I plan to fix it with an engine out of my first Mercedes an 83 300D that my daughter wrecked a few years back. Question is how many of you have had this oil pump chain to break or have heard of it? The plastic tensioner was broke as well although it is impossible to tell what let go first. |
JD,
You mean you plan to put a non turbo engine in the 300SD? The 300SD is an awful heavy car for a 75HP engine. That just might be the slowest car in the world. You might not be satisfied with it with a non turbo engine. I never heard of an oil pump chain breaking, but there is a first time for everything. I suppose the engine has been run without oil. Can the original engine be rebuilt? If the crankshaft is not scored, maybe new rings and bearings will fix the engine or a rebuilt short block would be in order. P E H |
That would be slower than a 240 automatic.... someone call the Guinness Book of Records people.... :D
|
Since when is an 83 300D non turbo? Maybe I missed something there....... But yeah, a non turbo SD would be slow.
|
1977-81 300D is non-turbo...1982-85 300D is turbo.
_________________________________________ jd, This seems like a good swap idea you have...go for it ! P.S. Keep us updated as you progress.:) |
OH, Thank Goodness.... having bug splatters on the rear window is SO embarassing....

OK I forgot that the later 300Ds have a Turbo engine.
It should be an easy swap, since its the same engine. Pay attention to the vacuum connections on both engines, especially the ones to the transmission. P E H |
Yes the doner engine is a turbo. The original engine may be rebuildable. Luckly the engine is not locked up and the crank may be OK. I'll have to pull it to tell for sure. The first two mains look OK, the bearings show the signs of run without oil. Going to part out if I don't rebuild.

Just a thought
Hello jdblann
RE: your wreck Just a thought. I do not know if your sill will fit; but kmaysob needs one. http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/diesel-discussion/88510-back-window-sill.html kmaysob Member back window sill the original owners of my sd decided to chop the covers for the med kit and the other compartment to install speakers. well when i bought the car they took them out. is it possible to get a new sill and compartments for it? if so what would it run me? |
No, you're talking W116 vs. W126.
|
This looks like a pretty good deal if you are into ebay. Shouldn't have any trouble at all dropping this engine in:D.
