Great news! Glad the slow and steady technique worked, although I have to say I am hoping to get a few more data points on Sbean's method before I need to give it a try. Jim

This AM I grabbed the end of the plug with some vice grips and then slid some long needle nose pliers just behind the tightening wheel of the vice grips and used a hammer on the side of the needle nose pliers. It came out with a few taps.

It was clear that the PB Blaster had done some work overnight. The plug was slimy and black along it's whole length. It was a Bosch plug so not the original.

I didn't have a reamer or any never-seize....and needed to get going today, so just put the new plug in and went on my way. I did start the engine and run it briefly to blow out whatever could come out.

Guess I could get the reamer and go through the process again.... but .....(sigh)...chances are...probably not ????? Even though I though I was lucky with the problem being the #1, and I didn't have to take the IM off...it was a PITA to get in there and I had to disconnect the three fuel lines from the fuel filter for better access. The car has 185K miles and I expect I'll probably need to do some others soon, so will order a reamer and be ready with the needed stuff and redo #1 at the same time.

All in all....I'm hugely relieved to just have the old plug out and new one in and nothing broken.

Next time anyone is doing GP's on one of these, fire me an email. I have the reamer and would gladly loan it out.

What diameter and length is the reamer? I often thought an appropriate sized drill bit turned by hand should work; any reason you can see that it wouldn't?

A couple of snapped glowplugs

I snapped not one but two glow plugs this weekend. The #3 and #5 plugs snapped after just a couple of turns. I went through all the precautions of PB blaster and slowly turning, now I have to find the best way to get them out. I really liked Jake's post on drilling then threading the core of the gp, it seems very straight forward, just need to go slow.
http://jakesbenzconversion.blogspot.com/2008/02/glow-plug-disaster.html Does anyone have any advise on how to best proceed.

Thanks
Mitchell

btw where can I buy a reemer tool?

That would appear to reference a 617 reamer; diffierent animal than the 606.

Mitchell - Jake and Kartek both did good work on extracting their GP's; review both.

I have a 606 reamer as well as the injector socket and DV socket - available for "rent" once my car is finally up and running again.

The Body of the 606 Glow Plugs is longer but the Electrode end is the same size.
Before I started to make the Glow Plug Reamers that I make I bought 1 factory 617 Pencile type reamer and 1 of the 606 type Factory Made (at over $70) Reamers and the Reamer Bits are the same size.

If you want to try your Drill Bit thing I believe the make 7mm.

Below are pics of the 2 factory reamers and my version of the 606 reamer at the very bottom. I us a 6 flute (groove) spiral reamer instead of the straight one.

Got to threads

I've drilled some pretty good holes on the glowplug, but have had no luck in removing the threads. I don't know if I should be more aggressive and use a larger bit, but I don't want to strip the threads off of the head. Any one have any suggestions in getting off the threaded portion of the glowplug?

Thanks
Mitchell

Dear lightman,
Thanks for that write-up. Very philanthropic of you. Professionally done, excellent advice. I'm curious about your VW TDI. How reliable and well made is it? I read a couple of years ago in a diesel magazine about a team using a green golf TDI for rally racing. It was a totally stock engine running on Biodiesel with 30 psi boost making 375 lb.ft. of torque!! That's 1.9 Liters of displacement!! The car was a real winner with all that torque in a light package. My dad just scored a 97 E300(606) from ebay for $5,950 with 188K on it so I'm doing all the fuel lines, o-rings and coolant hoses. I'm trying to buy the tool that holds the chain on the cam sprocket so I can do the chain too as it is showing 3.5 degrees of stretch and making a slight rattling sound. I was worried about the glow plugs but after reading about people drilling out the broken tips I think I can tackle that as well having a battle plan in case of disaster. Thanks
